New research has found that there is a common, overlapping environment in the gut bacteria of people living with mental illnesses like depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety.
The research, published today in JAMA Psychiatry, found that people experiencing these illnesses are more likely to have gut biomes that are characterized both by a lack of anti-inflammatory producing bacteria, as well as a higher amount of proinflammatory bacteria. The research does not considered these biomarkers, but it does suggest that a greater awareness of gut health should be considered in the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
Gut microbiota is the large and dynamic community of microorganisms that live in the human gastrointestinal tract. This can include bacteria, viruses and fungi, as well as other types of microorganism. Previous studies have pointed to the important role that the gut microbiota plays in the development of mental illness.
The study found that people experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and psychosis were consistently found to have lower levels of faecalibacterium and coprococcus, two types of bacteria that have an anti-inflammatory effect within the gut. Further analysis found that individuals with these illnesses had higher levels of Eggerthella, a bacterium with pro-inflammatory effects.
Professor Allan Young, the study's lead researcher from King's IoPPN said that "our findings demonstrate that changes in the composition of the microbiota are widespread and, even though it is likely to be a lot more complicated than that, we see some indication of how they may be linked to other known underlying mechanisms of mental illness, such as the regulation of inflammatory processes. It is becoming more and more clear that the health of the gut microbiota is vitally important to the wider mental health of individuals."

Really? We are being told in multiple threads we should take silver in order to “kill all” bacteria and viruses that live in us.
Silver ions do have a place, but they can also cause real problems. For one, they screw up the ability for skin cells in the first layer of skin to properly set, making for poor wound recovery. It's true silver can keep bacteria in that wound down, but at the expense of the very repair one needs.
There are other examples of pros/cons for silver ions in our bodies, but it is obvious we still have plenty of bacteria left in our gut after ingesting silver ions.
The gut needs beneficial bacteria to digest food properly. Bad bacteria causes inflammation.
In a way the Colloidal silver smurf man looks like John Durham only blue.

I have no words. Still learning to walk, they are.
Key point: It is NOT POSSIBLE to take a probiotic pill alone to treat dysbiosis, nor a combined change in dietary intake.
It’s a LOT more complicated - in terms of explanation, and causation - but most people are content to ignore what they don’t understand and keep digging a deeper hole.
I will agree, however, that commonly available probiotics are horribly negligent in content & diversity (I have to order mine online).

On a side note the earth is also flat. As I age I seem to be leery about all the new breakthrough studies that are usually amended as time passes. Also did you know that the earth is flat? They just did a study!
Fermented foods are good for you. I make water kefir and drink it everyday. Super easy to make and I’ve lost a ton of weight.
I just started to take Relief Factor which is designed to reduce inflammation (3 days). Not only is my pain a little better but I feel a better sense of well being. Have had depression for many years. Worth a try.
I hope that works for you. I did note, when looking at the ingredients, that you could get other forms of some of that with better efficacy, so if you do notice a bump toward feeling better, perhaps you could juice it more with other forms.
A few days late to the thread, but I would love to know more. I have a sister who suffers from depression and I think, maybe undiagnosed bipolar. I love her but she is hard to be around. She seems to want to be miserable.
She has a terribly unhealthy diet, so I would be interested to learn more about our gut microbiome.
You’ve heard “You are what you eat.” In this case you are also what takes up residence in your intestine.
The two probiotic bacteria listed in the first comment are available in probiotic formulations you can buy at the store. Gut bacteria live in colonies and find a stasis point all along the intestinal tract. Unfortunately, they can be dysfunctional, due to eating habits and one’s own prior health concerns. Yes, there is a feedback loop between you and your bacteria. In a way, you are both directing the other entity.
We can change the makeup of our guy bacteria by changing our diet. We can help that change by supplementing with probiotic cultures, from yogurt or pills/capsules. Very different varieties exist among all the choices and, generally, all the “for purchase” bacteria are shown to be helpful in some form. However, the two I mentioned in the first post are not typically found in yogurts.
Prebiotics are food for these bacteria, to help them colonize. Prebiotics are more inclined to help good bacteria over bad, because if you were already eating the components of the prebiotics, you’d already have a different, more positive, set of bacterial colonies. Unfortunately, prebiotics, by design, are responsible for extra gas in people, which limits people’s willingness to use them. Fiber is a prebiotic, for instance. You and I can’t get nutrition from it, but some bacteria can.
