‘Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet’ campaign
"Open defecation
The main problem is that due to open defecation and lack of wash water, sanitation is a big issue. They lack basic toilets, so they don’t put the human excreta in the right place or even if they collect the excreta in a bucket, they just dump it in areas where people are preparing and eating food and where children play. It has really been a nightmare and it’s embarrassing in a way because most of the populace is actually right here in Yola North which is the main local government that is affected. Usually when the outbreaks occur, particularly in Mubi, there is quick mobilisation and it’s a smaller area.
"Why can’t government come up with a legislation, making it mandatory for every house to have a toilet?
Yes, but at the moment, people build homes without toilets. Even when you are travelling and need to use the toilet, there is none, it’s not healthy. The facilities have to be in place.
Onchocerciasis
Onchocerciasis or River blindness is another study we are doing currently. It’s really interesting because although there has been interventions with Ivermectin but there hasn’t been anything proactive in seeing the effects particularly on the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in Mubi. Interestingly, I realised it actually affects women’s menstrual cycle and fertility. It is amongst the group of what is called Neglected Tropical Diseases so there has not really been a lot of investigations and that’s the new area we are looking into." . . ." . . .

Ivermectin causes sterilization in 85 percent of men, study finds

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The effects of Ivermectin therapy on human males can have an effect on men’s reproductive health.
Researchers at three universities in Nigeria studied the effects of Ivermectin, which is used to treat river blindness and other medical conditions in humans, on men’s sperm counts. According to their study, 85 percent of men who take Ivermectin become sterilized.
Ivermectin is often used as an anthelmintic to combat parasites in animals and some people have been using it to fight COVID-19 despite health experts’ recommendations against it.
Many years ago, I worked with a young Nigerian man who was studying to become a scientist. He was very concerned with River Blindness in his country and hoped to be able to do something about it.

Every so often, Americans could use a reminder that a great deal of the world still lives this way, day after day, year after year. I think this is similar to large areas of India and Pakistan too. Ethiopia and Yemen, maybe the same thing there too.
Y’know... it’s not like we did NOT know this 100 years ago...
Makes a bit more sense - it’s what the ivermectin was treating that caused it, not the ivermectin itself. That “study” showed only a correlation - not a causation.
Nice find.
Perhaps one day in future.
To be of service, certainly.

San Francisco America lives this way too.
I’ve been to India. Yep.
Yep. Too much of that city is smile coated. This keeps being brought to Mayor London Breed’s attention, but she doesn’t seem to pay much attention. “I don’t have to pay attention to that yucky stuff. I’m female, I’m one 1/8th black, and I down with ‘the struggle’. So there!”
smile = slime
The title of this thread, as presented, is a little misleading.
River Blindness and Cholera are caused differently. Cholera is caused by a bacterium. Onchocerciasis (River blindness) is caused by a parasite, transmitted by a type of fly.
Ivermectin, among other efforts, has been used in programs to control Onchocerciasis; sanitation and vaccine have been used to combat cholera.

A humanitarian crisis. I guess we have to bring them all here.
