you played it safe...
'cept for my Browns. Time for some payback.
Best to play it safe in week #1 IMHO when you really have no idea what's coming out of the chute.

If someone misses a week, do they default to:
8-8 or
all home teams or
all favored teams
?
Hey...I kinda like that idea. What about all "dogs"? That would inflict a little punishment for carelessness, but also put you in position to grab a few miracle upsets. Honestly, ALL of your proposed ideas sound intriguing to me. They'd provide incentive to not throw in the towel if you slip up and miss a week.
Perhaps I could take your alt scoring model and subtract one win (and add one loss) for every CONSECUTIVE week that person misses. IOW, he gets "all dogs" for the first week he misses and gets "all dogs" minus one if he misses the following week.
Obviously not my call to make being a simple and humble participant. But I'd happily play along with any rules without complaint.
Traditionally, I've posted a "cumulative" html table which I intend to do again this season. That part's easy. I just read the results Impy posts and plop them into a spreadsheet, sort, and post. Impy has the hard part of going through everybody's picks to determine their weekly record.
I'd even be willing to post an "alt" table if we end up sticking to the traditional scoring but you wanna see what the standings WOULD look like with an alternative scoring model like that. YOU or somebody else though would need to be willing to post what the default "non-participant score" would be based on whatever alternative model you'd settle for. I would then plop them into my table accordingly.
Regardless, you've got some fun ideas to kick about a bit, whether we go with them or not.
If any of y'all want to see numbers sorted differently or something like that, just ping me directly. As long as it's reasonable and not an overwhelming number of requests (and as long as you're not a Steeler fan), I'll happily resort/refactor and post something (clearly labeled as such) for you. I find these threads a lot of fun, a welcome temporary distraction, and a great opportunity to trash-talk freepers who may otherwise be intellectually superior, or in the case of Steelers fans, be intellectually lacking.

Texans are home underdogs against the rookie QB and rookie HC led Jaguars.
Of course, they are piss-poor and have an estimated 0.00% chance to win the Super Bowl.

Compiling picks is a bit of work, I always forget what my systems was when a new season starts and I always procrastinate. And people post their picks in a different order than others because sources differ!
As you recall the way I’ve done it before is missed picks don’t count towards a persons total and we have a wins leader and % leader, it’s not like we have money on it (first place is a Cadillac Eldorado, second prize is a set of steak knives....). !
Though I admit, the mathematical impurity of missed picks does bother me. LOL. Defaulting to .500 for missed weeks is an idea...and 1 or 2 missed picks for a week could default to favorites.....I shall ruminate. ;)
I can’t thank you enough for adding up every week for me!!!

Any bettors out there?
It looks to me that the bookies are all in for Buffalo and San Francisco.
https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers-buffalo-bills-20210912002/
56% of the money on Buffalo (-275)
44% on Pittsburgh.(+225)
So, let’s say 5600 on Buffalo.
That’s 20.36 bets @ 275 each.
4400 on Pittsburgh
That’s 44 bets @ 100 each.
If Buffalo wins, payouts are 20.36 x $375 = $7636.36
Bookie wins $2363.64 (10k - 7636)
If Pittsburgh wins, payouts are 44 x $325 = $14300
Bookie loses $4300. (10K - 14300)
I would have expected more games like Chicago-Rams
75% on Rams (-350)
25% on Bears. (+280)
7500/350 = 21.43 bets@350
2500/100 = 25 bets@100
If Rams win, payout is 21.43 x 450 = 9642.86
Bookie wins $357.14
If Bears win, payout is 25 x 380 = 9500
Bookie wins $500
Bookie wins either way on Rams/Bears but is taking a big chance on Buffalo.
Maybe I’m missing something.

My Cowboys held their own against the defending champs. And they looked really good doing it. Except for the kicking ... need to work on that.
That game gave me hopes for a good season.
