More than 400 Amherst College students have signed a letter objecting to COVID-19 protocols that require masks outdoors and prohibit them from going to off-campus restaurants and bars. Indoor dining at the school is also banned.
The college had already mandated that all students, faculty and staff be vaccinated.
The letter to college president Carolyn “Biddy” Martin says “the guidelines are not based on any given data, have been developed without student input, are significantly stricter than our peer institutions, and are in conflict with (U.S. Centers for Disease Control) guidelines.”
Martin wrote on the college’s website Aug. 27 that the decision was based on the best information administrators have at this time.
“Things looked so promising back in July in this country,” she wrote. “We imagined a Fall semester that would be much closer to what we had considered normal before the pandemic. However, the delta variant is proving to be a game-changer. We are in the midst of a surge, and you are arriving on campus from all over the country and the world, including from delta hotspots. Hopefully, the spread will level off and recede, as it appears to have done elsewhere.”
Amherst College’s enrollment of 2,000 includes students from at least 32 countries and 43 states in the U.S. Classes began on Monday.

No data I have seen has shown Covid will spread outside or at restaurants. In fact, in MA over the last few weeks only 11 "clusters" were attributed to any form of dining.
If over 400 students signed, that is around 20% of the students who had enough.
They pay the school to be treated like that.
In prison someone else pays for the inmates imprisonment.
20% -— they’ll be told “we hear you” but the policy won’t change.
They aren’t going to leave.
This madness will only stop when people start standing up to it.
Ironic since Lord Jeffery Amherst, governor general of the British colony of Massachusetts, weaponized smallpox-infected blankets to subdue the fractious Indian tribes in his domain.
The ones in charge knew it from the start ...
I hope this happens soon. It is getting worse everyday. I think that only 50% of the people even know what is happening to our country. (maybe less)
“I told you not to go to school in Massachusetts,” said the scorpion to the frog.
long past time we put an end to this nonsense
I find it astonishing that we have people here, right on this forum, who see no problem with these kinds of actions.
They say it isn’t unconstitutional for employers to do the work of the the government and require you to be vaccinated or lose your job. They say, “Oh, they aren’t forcing you to leave or retire, that is your choice.”
Right here on this forum. Right here on Free Republic.
True. Now, we see even the uber leftists college students push back. Should be interesting.
Women make the best tyrants.
“Have the leftists at Amherst College actually woke up to the fact that it is all about control and not health anymore.”
I thought it was only TRUMP VOTERS who had an issue with draconian covid rules - who would have guessed that 90% of Amhurst is 90% Trump voters.
Was at Amherst College today, most of the students I saw outside were not wearing masks.
So I was going to post a similar article until I did a search and you posted this.
After implementing a vaccine mandate, Amherst requires double-masking and limits student travel
I posted a lot of stuff in the fall of last year about colleges and their Covid restrictions.
Of note is that it started out with one or two colleges being really ridiculous but then quickly multiplied.
Uh, so they don't get to eat at all, even woke food?
If I were a student on that campus, I would simply ignore the rule. If pressed by the administrators, I would ask, “Which way to the showers?”
They are being trained to be future concentration camp inmates.
Like any slaves they have three choices:
—Obey their masters
—Organize and resist
—Flee
Amherst won’t let the students eat at indoor dining centers, nor outdoor dining centers. How will the students take nourishment, osmosis?
