A COVID-19 patient in Oregon has died while waiting for an ICU bed to open up amid overrun hospitals across the U.S. due to the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant...
"It had been several hours because other COVID positive patients had filled those beds. Even after expanding ICU care onto other floors, there weren't any beds available for this patient. We didn't have enough. This patient died in the Emergency Department waiting for an Intensive Care Unit bed."...
...The state only has 41 ICU beds and 310 non-ICU beds available for patients, while 870 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized in Oregon with 128 on ventilators.

How did this get to be the standard of care? It's not. It's a travesty of the standard of care. My wife is a physician. She is appalled and disgusted by what is going on. She is no longer in direct patient care. She thinks most doctors are simply scared. Nobody wants to go against the narrative.

I’ve been in ICUs a few times and the difference is NOT the bed. The difference is that a nurse is right there 24 hours a day with only 1-2 patients to look after.

Nonsense story. An ICU can’t do anything for a COVID patient that can’t be done in a non-ICU setting.
What’s more, I don’t believe the story in the first place. It Newsweak, after all. Home of misinformation.

In the ICU you have respiratory therapists who understand the ventilators, and very highly trained, cream of the crop nurses, only two patients each. It’s the staff that’s the scarcity.
When my mother was in the ICU a lot of the nurses were gay men, tailored scrubs, up-combed hair, a bit swish. They could combine the masculine love of high tech machines, and feminine caring side. I became surprisingly glad when one of them was assigned to my mother. They took very good care of her.

I guess it was the number vacant and available to covid patients at that moment in time.

I've seen the same story repeated for my local area. Oh, the hospital is over-run with no beds available. Almost word-for-word mimicking the reports of the status of hospitals in other states. Then, when someone chimes in that they themselves work at or have been to that same hospital recently and didn't see any evidence of such, the original source states that it must be the "ebb and flow" of hospital admissions.
The stories are all the same. Ambulances are backed up with two hour waits. The ER is overflowing and beds are placed in the hallways as the patient awaits someone to die and a room to be free.
However, when actual locals chime in and say that's not the case, the person basically responds with "well, it could have happened".
So, without actual evidence, I'm wary of these reports.

All sources get their stories from the AP. You will see the same story on ABC, CBS, NBC, etc. with a credit to the AP. No one actually verifies the report.

No they don’t. Fox and two local stations had the news about the beds being almost filled three days ago. It’s only the little outfits that can’t afford their own reporting that lean on the AP.

How did this get to be the standard of care? If there were treatment alternatives the FDA by law couldn't sign off on an experimental vaccine. Not that the law really matters anymore anyway.
