Question for anyone in maeical field
Me | brianr10

Posted on 08/09/2021 7:29:06 AM PDT by brianr10

My Dr. put me on a statin even though my cholesterol was only 177. She said they have a new formula they use that uses your age, weight, and some other parameters that indicated I was at an elevated risk for a heart attack. I asked her what would happen If I lost 30 lbs, could I skip the statins, she seemed to indicate yes. I am 5'9''and 205. Is anyone familiar with this new formula?

I lost 60 pounds simply by intermittent fasting, you can eat what you want. I say simply but that doesn’t mean easy, but I bet for many people it’s easier than any other method. “Diets” are mostly BS, it’s all about your motivation. And you will have to be motivated one way or another.

Nobody you know can go on a low carb diet because they are addicted to carbs, and they don’t understand what they need to do, read the link - it is 13 pages by a medical doctor who explains in simple terms.

Your blood lipid parameters will improve. And a whole bunch of ofher stuff, just as important. I eat carbs, but not very many, they are like drugs. Good Luck!!!

Just say no to drugs. And most medications.

I think the new formula is the same as the old formula...

more statin prescriptions = more drug company profits + more free meals for the doctors from pharma sales reps

After studying this, I came to a similar conclusion as you. Processed or refined sugar in particular, is basically human rocket fuel. Except, most people aren’t reaching for the stars, they are sitting on their ass. It isn’t the sugar per se, it’s that any excess calories are turned into fat, our bodies turn into “sugar burners” and are incapable of burning any fat for energy.

A marathon runner will need about 4000 calories or so. At one time I could eat that much and then take a nap. For heavy exertion, for quick energy refined sugar is tough to beat as an energy food, but it is more or less a poison otherwise. “The dose makes the poison” in this case.

I remember reading Colin Fletcher’s books, he was a Royal Marine in WWII and moved to California in the 1950s, he was an early backpacker, before people did that kind of thing. He walked the length of California carrying everything he needed, as backpackers do, with strategic food caches placed along the way, in 1958.

He mostly ate the same meal every day (He was British, after all. Or Welsh, I think), basically a form of meatloaf, gravy, and mashed potatoes. But he also consumed about 4 pounds + or so a week of cane sugar in different forms. This isn’t as dumb as it sounds, because he was burning more calories than he was taking in, and it’s tough to carry enough calories. Fats are good, but are tough to digest in those amounts. By the 1980s he was still writing books, but the “low fat low calorie” fad had taken over, and sugar was right out. He explained he no longer recommended this, and was going on about Spirulina tablets and all sorts of crazy stuff.

I started intermittent fasting three years ago. Within two weeks I noticed my acid reflux problem was improving. Within a few months I was no longer taking my acid reflux medication. My doctor has since taken me off of a statin due to better blood work numbers. I also dropped about 15 pounds and now weigh what I did when I was in my twenties.

I eat during an eight hour window every day. It is hard for the first six weeks or so, but stick with it and enjoy the benefits.

Do you know what your HDL & LDL numbers are?

That isn't the right question. You need to do a MNR Lipo profile. This tells you if you have the small, dangerous cholesterol, or the large puffy harmless ones. Ask your doctor. If s/he doesn't know, find a different doctor

I had my annual blood work done at my doc's office a year ago now & my results were posted online (thru MyChart). I looked them over prior to my doc visit that we were to go over my blood work results, refill any scripts, etc. When I was in the exam room, my doc said "Wow! We need to get you on a statin! Your cholesterol is over 200!" To which I replied, "yes, but my results show my good cholesterol is 160". He said, "oh yeah, I see that now. We'll hold off on that statin & look at that again next year"
The point of telling you all that long story was to implore you to be sure to ask questions.....you're paying them to watch over your health! They need to explain things to you & not expect you to just accept their word as gospel. It's sad that we're run thru those appts like cattle & half the time, I'm not sure they are paying much attention between you & the person that was just in their exam room!

Keep us posted please!

And to repeat myself, ask the doc to show one study that shows taking statins make you live longer. He can't, because there is no such study.

S/He will tell you that people with high cholesterol have higher instances of heart disease. And statins reduce cholesterol. But taking statins do not help you live longer, and they cause many other problems

Everything she said is in my post, She said I am at 13% increased risk for heart attack based on all these factors, like age, weight, BP., and that the low Cholesterol number of 177 is no longer determinative. My triglycerides were down in the 90s from 150.

Your question was: “Is anyone familiar with this new formula?” I’m saying if you want specifics of what formula your doctor used and how, ask your doctor.

But try this:

Also do not seek competent medical advice from strangers on the internet. It doesn’t always have a good ending.

Niacin (nicotinic acid) will lower LDL, lipoprotein(a), and triglycerides, and elevates HDL(the good cholesterol).

It’s a big open field were people go to ask medical questions from strangers (or cows) who are not in the medical field.

There is almost nothing that always has a good ending.

Club crackers are my downfall! I can go without all sweets and breads and pasta and etc etc etc; but I love my crackers.

I’m a cracker!

Yeah, it is an outstanding way to burn off fat and lose pounds. There’s no substitute or way around it we have to eat less calories to reduce. But intermittent fasting makes it easier for me, I eat one meal a day, and mostly large satisfying meals of things I like. Casseroles, meatloaf, pizza, bacon and eggs.

But there are other benefits apart from simply burning off the fat, it has some interesting properties with respect to blood pressure, blood lipids or cholesterol, allergies, immune system, inflammation and all kinds of stuff.

The acid reflux you mentioned was also something I was starting to experience, and weird rashes, and other unmentionables. I suppose I was becoming pre-diabetic, I’m not sure. Certainly insulin resistant or metabolic syndrome. I won’t say it has always been easy, but it is very simple and I’m not going back. The statistics for weight loss and keeping it off are not very good. It’s one thing to lose it, but quite another to keep it off. I would be willing to bet intermittent fasters have better outcomes over time for keeping the weight off or backsliding.
