Pelosi turns tables on White House, urges eviction ban extension

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team on Sunday urged President Joe Biden to immediately renew and extend the eviction moratorium until Oct. 18 after House Democrats failed to marshal the votes to prevent its lapse this weekend.

Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) issued a joint statement Sunday night putting the ball back in the Biden administration’s court, after the White House on Thursday said it could not extend the eviction ban and urged Congress to do it.

“It is clear that the Senate is not able to [extend the ban], and any legislation in the House, therefore, will not be sufficient,” the senior Democrats said. “Action is needed, and it must come from the administration."....

The lapse of the moratorium this weekend meant millions of tenants around the country faced the risk of losing their homes. About 7.4 million adult tenants reported they were behind on rent in the latest U.S. Census Bureau survey, which was taken during the last week of June and the first week of July. About 3.6 million tenant households said they were “somewhat likely” or “very likely” to face eviction over the next two months

They don't care the USSC has said it's illegal as an executive action.

Just like DACA.

How many small landlords have they killed already?

As the leader of the house, asking the President to perform an unlawful act is tantamount to treason and she should immediately be removed from office.

Nancy could house quite a few people in her mansions.

But, she’s a socialist, and they’re not much for sharing.

Now she thinks she is more powerful than SCOTUS. Wonder what John Roberts thinks about the arrogant monsters he helped create now?

If the nation is facing worker shortages while the givernment is offering free rent and unemployment dollars, might the problem be solved if the rent holiday and benefits holidays are ended, and the people understand that they have to work to eat?

Asking for a friend...

Biden’s actions at the border should be treasonous enough to call for removal, however since the entire government has been corrupted by Obama, we have NO justice dept.

This is the result of having a weak government.

I understand the moratorium. I don’t understand not paying the landlords.

Vladimir Lenin himself described them as “bloodsuckers, vampires, plunderers of the people and profiteers, who fatten on famine,”[4] declaring revolution against them to liberate poor peasants, farm laborers, and proletariat (the much smaller class of urban and industrial workers).[5]

During the first five-year plan, Stalin’s all-out campaign to take ownership and organisation from the peasantry meant that “peasants with a couple of cows or five or six acres [~2 ha] more than their neighbors” were labeled kulaks.[6] Under dekulakization, government officials seized farms and killed some resisters,[3][7] deported others to labor camps, and drove many to migrate to the cities following the loss of their property to the collective.[8]

My 2nd house was paid off free and clear before I had a tenant. Just property taxes, insurance and common maintenance/operational cost (water, gas, electricity, lawn mowing). I didn't get consistent rent until June last year. Due to my income bracket, my state income tax alone weighs in at $15k, so the additional $5k in property taxes doesn't qualify for federal deductions. Collecting rent to offset the taxes is important to me. In December, I received a call from the tenant. The heater failed. The weather forecast was for single digits. I engaged a local vendor. $4800 later, the heater was replaced. Again, collecting rent matters as I need to cover the emergency repair. Fortunately, the tenant has been consistent in paying. I'm collecting enough to cover taxes and replenish the money needed for the emergency repair. Net income might actually occur for 2021.

She probably owns rental properties...and thus has some common sense, if only for self protection.

I gather from all this that Pelosi is not a landlord.

But on second thought, maybe she is. And she has already carved out an exemption for herself.

The longer the moratorium runs, the more renters will owe, at least those who believe the moratorium is reason to stop paying rent. Also , the worse shape landlords will be necessitating rent increases. In other words, it will only make things worse. Renters are already demanding back rent they owe be wiped out. All of these factors ultimately mean a significant reduction in low cost housing which will lead to increased homelessness. The cities are becoming uninhabitable as it is and the Democrats seem interested only in making things worse. They have to know that.

It wouldn’t be hard to make a case that “not paying the landlords” is a violation of Amendment Five of the US Constitution.

“... nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

And destroyed Russian agriculture in the process.

So I wonder when the Federales will seize the rental properties in the name of the tenants?

The bill will have to be paid sometime. It almost like when Obama got elected and we all had to listen over and over to the sound bite of the lady saying “Obama will pay my rent now”…
Will the White House admit this not so popular tidbit. The landlord who has a mortgage is still on the hook for his payments and the courts have said this is Not Legal. To suspend eviction and not pay rent.
