I understand that they (medical industry) must be able to see virus differences under electron microscopes, but I'm curious how it is possible to determine tens of thousands cases.
Does anyone understand the science for determining the variants of local viruses?
Surely not all the cases are sampled and tested. We get information in percentage e.g. “40% of new cases are Delta” and “10% of cases in the Southeast are Colombian variant” etc but how many samples run?
They should be able to break down the variants by their sequences. It’s really just 4 different parts of amino acids strung together over a billion times. So any variation from the original sequence becomes a new variant. Though, this is fully expected in nature. As anything replicates (viruses, human cells etc) they sometimes mutate and/or degrade. Billions of cells replicating billions of times it sometimes doesn’t come out the same.

I’m 58. EVERY last year of my life, I’ve gotten a bug or two.. or three..
I have allergies. I have slight occasional asthma. Like you say, when we get colds, stuffy noses, sore throats, etc... yeah, we lose some sense of taste and smell. Why are people acting as though this is some flesh-eating disease that will kill you in a matter of hours without the magic serum?
It’s a PART OF LIFE on this planet. We get sick. We were given IMMUNE SYSTEMS to handle most of this stuff.
I’m really tired of politicians and people who idolize them trying to make getting sick illegal these days.
Covid is a culling disease, It kills the sick and elderly and much more efficiently than the Flu. The population who normally die or are hospitalized by the Flu got cleared out by Covid

This is conjecture and a large assumption. Tens of thousands die of the flu each year and you have a test that can’t tell the difference between the flu and COVID.
No one dying of the flu all of a sudden and everyone dying of COVID with absolutely no proof of what killed them is a large assumption.

Yes of course. But what is the sample size is my question. Is it large enough for high confidence? Are the samples collected randomly from around the country or just specific hot spots, etc? Lots of ways to manipulate data by selection bias among other biases.
According to CDC numbers, more than twice as many have died in the US in 6 months, under biden than died in over a year under President Trump.
Basically, based on whether the news of the day favors dims or not...

More seriously - I think it relates to genetic differentiation. I’m not entirely sure, though.
IDK the sample size but it needn’t be very large for meaningful data. Whether say a 70% rate is accurate within 1% or 10% doesn’t really mean much in this instance. If the Indian variant is 60% or 80% of cases, it’s still clearly the dominant strain it seems to me.
I suppose you’re right, unless one or more of the “vaccines” are less effective against a particular variant. Data out of Israel and the UK isn’t very encouraging (Pfizer and AstraZeneca, respectively) against Delta variant. Still seems somewhat effective but not as robust nor lasting. Israel says Pfizer is only 39% effective but still reduces serious illness by around 90% or so. AZ vaccine seems the weakest (compared to the 3 we have here, not sure about Russian/Indian vaccines) but the UK/EU had to take what was available at the time.
I read that in the UK, 40% of hospitalizations are among double-jabbed with the AZ vaccine... not good.

Do you know where that came from? I mean, I know you said CDC numbers, but that is really vague. I saw a chart that shows the number of deaths over time, and I think the closet one could say is twice as many have died since Biden was elected.
