Empty seats, zero atmosphere, diminished team numbers, local protests and a world distracted by coronavirus all combined to deliver just 16.7 million viewers for NBC’s four-hour long broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday. It was the smallest U.S. television audience for the event in the past 33 years.
Keen Olympic watchers would have to go back to the opening ceremony for the 1988 Seoul Games, which attracted 22.7 million TV viewers, to see numbers like it.
It was also lower than the 1992 Barcelona Games, when 21.6 million people tuned in, according to Nielsen data supplied to Reuters, although some critics could see what lay ahead before one athlete had entered the arena for the march past.
As Breitbart News reported, corporate media has been quick to trash the opener as a somber production performed to a “sea of empty seats,” a striking departure from the vibrancy and life that featured Olympics’ past.
According to the New York Times, the performances themselves aimed to “divert the message of the Games away from the pandemic and scandals and toward the more anodyne themes of peace and global harmony.”
“But that messaging may have little resonance with the Japanese public, as coronavirus infections in Tokyo have risen to a six-month high and the domestic vaccine rollout has proceeded slowly,” the Times reported.
During quieter moments in the show however, “protesters outside the stadium could be heard yelling ‘Stop the Olympics” through bullhorns,’” the paper reported.

I don't care what the athletes say...part of that thrill is the cheering audience. I dislike the wokism but not every athlete or entertainer etc is into this stupidity...many of these athletes train hard, usually don't make much money, probably love America, but they are being robbed of a big part of their glory.
A few weeks ago I attended a live, in-person gig...sweaty humans were moshing, people were drinking alcohol, guys were trying to hook up with gals (and visa versa), and wireless guitarists were jumping into the audience. A few people were masked but given the demographics, I doubt everyone has gotten their shots.
I am telling you, we will perish as humans if they make us go into the hole again. I also suspect, we will see resistance that'll make Dearborn look like nothing.
Not a single millisecond will be wasted by watching any of this Woke B$ posing as Olympics.

The Euro 2020 finals between England and Italy coupla weeks ago had TV ratings of nearly million, out of a British population of less than 70 million.

I don’t understand how the olympics are “woke”, is it just because they are overly cautious about covid? The olympics has always been about different countries coming together yada yada, it’s boring but nothing bad

Thank you for reminding me why I’m not watching. I’m not sure what it takes to get fired today but this failure would qualify in any true business model.
1. Watch amateurs play a sport, not privileged millionaire professionals.

3. Live competition is always better than taped hours later when yu can find out the results before you watch.
And a swimsuit competition always helps.
While the viewing in this country might be low, I'll bet the people in Latvia and Jamaica and (you pick a small country with just a few people on the team) are watching somebody they may know personally run with the big dogs, and maybe even get a medal. Here, this is just another "Oscars" or "Grammys" or rerun of "My Mother The Car".
Maybe NBC can run the NBA Finals again and see if those ratings improve from the original.

We were watching the swimming finals, Men’s 400 Freestyle last night. For the first time a gentleman from Tunisia won the Gold! A great Olympic moment! We truly enjoyed his win. Then Infinity decides to lecture us with a commercial about racism. Turned the channel and will not watch anymore Olympics.
I don’t watch TV by preference. But even if I did, I wouldn’t be watching the Olympics. “Wokeism” totally turns me off.
The Olympics committee should have demanded a DNA test for all athletes. XX competes in women’s sports. XY competes in men’s sports. Period. No exceptions. American coaches should have told the team members, “If you do anything to denigrate America, you won’t participate. Period.”
With You Tube TV my wife and I have every Olympic event available to us when we are ready to watch. Already got to see some archery and table tennis. We’ll skip most of the “major” events and avoid basketball like the plague. Despite the wokeness we still believe in the old fashioned notion that the olympics should be the best non professional athletes and politics and grandstanding has no place there.
Leftists don’t understand math, not even simply addition and subtraction. Further they don’t understand concepts such as “the lowest” number in a given number of years. They are both ignorant and too stupid to comprehend if you tried to explain it.

Nevermind it was boring and sucked. They are probably glad they had no crowd! China’s summer opening as much as I hate to admit, was the best.
