Empty seats, zero atmosphere, diminished team numbers, local protests and a world distracted by coronavirus all combined to deliver just 16.7 million viewers for NBC’s four-hour long broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday. It was the smallest U.S. television audience for the event in the past 33 years.
Keen Olympic watchers would have to go back to the opening ceremony for the 1988 Seoul Games, which attracted 22.7 million TV viewers, to see numbers like it.
It was also lower than the 1992 Barcelona Games, when 21.6 million people tuned in, according to Nielsen data supplied to Reuters, although some critics could see what lay ahead before one athlete had entered the arena for the march past.
As Breitbart News reported, corporate media has been quick to trash the opener as a somber production performed to a “sea of empty seats,” a striking departure from the vibrancy and life that featured Olympics’ past.
According to the New York Times, the performances themselves aimed to “divert the message of the Games away from the pandemic and scandals and toward the more anodyne themes of peace and global harmony.”
“But that messaging may have little resonance with the Japanese public, as coronavirus infections in Tokyo have risen to a six-month high and the domestic vaccine rollout has proceeded slowly,” the Times reported.
During quieter moments in the show however, “protesters outside the stadium could be heard yelling ‘Stop the Olympics” through bullhorns,’” the paper reported.

Apparently she’s in every other commercial they’re showing during the Games...UGGGH!
Def poetry jam, blunt rolling, and micro aggression recognition…
Maybe people are tired of Burn Loot Murder, and curdled yeastie breath RappinHo
Yup
I can’t tell you the joy I feel watching the ratings collapse of this woke mess.
And there you have it, folks. Get woke, get effed.
They are doing that. Only those who test positive for marijuana are allowed into the competition.
They were so ugly, solid red. The flag is red, white and blue, not solid red. And, the basic design was not very attractive either. Ugh. Changed channels. I will admit that last night I happened upon a swim contest. The Japanese woman won gold, U.S. took silver and bronze.
Couldn't tell you the names or anything, but it is weird to not have a lot of fans in the venues cheering for their countrymen/women.
Of course they will have a the virtue signal special reports on all the athletes who hate America.
I’m tuning out for two reasons:
1. No desire to see woke Olympians who hate America.
2. No desire to see woke commercials. (Saw an ad the other night while I was on the treadmill at the gym. The sponsor said it was a proud Olympic supporter and then felt the need to show me a pregnant woman in bed with a lesbian lover caressing her stomach.)
All of this wokeness in shows, sports and ads is the main reason we got rid of our cable years ago.
NBC decided to spend time on this witch during the Parade of Nations before it was even time for Team USA’s entrance. That’s another aspect of this. The coverage isn’t just woke, it’s BAD. They constantly interrupt events to talk about other things. There’s an ad every five seconds. And that ad probably has this witch or someone similar in it. It’s Idiocracy.
I’ll watch the Vanuatu rower if they broadcast his heat. Otherwise, no thanks.
Go Riilio Rii!
Well NBC hardly ever broadcasts any Olympics live anyway. They usually play tapped events. They did that with the London Olympics too.
It’s good they are paying the price for their arrogance. As well as conservatives not watching
because most of the US sports people being very woke, Trump hating, conservative hating and nasty.
I wouldn’t watch it if they paid me.
I hope that some teams have uniforms that look like the USA’s colors are red white and blue. At least the blue is somewhat like the blue in our flag, and not such a dark blue that it looks black which has been the case at some previous Olympics.
I wouldn’t watch it if you paid me! Just communism on parade is all it is.
Ok, now that’s funny.
And that’s funny, too.
They’re already having that? I literally had no idea.
