The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
You are such a busy, adventurous lady! Growing taters in straw usually works well; fingers crossed for you! Now, how about some @#$%^&! RAIN? We are getting NONE over here in Iowa County. NONE!
I finally found my spading fork (Yes, Beau had it and finally confessed, for those of you following along at home, LOL!) so I’m going to dig some today from each row and see what’s what. Beau says I should dig them all, but since I’ve been doing ALL the food work around here, and he’ll be home on Wednesday, it’s going right to the BOTTOM of my To-Do List for the next few days, Hide my spading fork on me? Yeah, you’re gonna become QUITE familiar with it in the very near future, LOL!
‘Whatever Mix’ from last year, Red Norland, Kennebeck and German Butterball. Yum!
After being near-drowned, Central Missouri is now getting baked. Believe it or not, after 20+ inches of rain in less than 30 days, a week since the last rain I’m having to put water on a few things in my garden. This year has been the nuttiest weather I can remember for quite a long time.
The squash is producing like crazy. Mrs. Augie has shredded 20+ pounds of zucchini and frozen it for later use. The pole beans are getting to the point they will need picking three times a week. Pepper plants aren’t dead, but they look pretty bad. Beets are ready to harvest.
Seeded okra, collards, turnips, and rutabaga last Friday. Need to prep the spot where I had green salad planted to make room for more collards.
Just mix chp veggies, cream cheese, shredded cheddar.
Spread on flour tortillas, roll up, cut bite size.
One of our favorite low-carb snacks! :)
I ADORE those dill pickles with cream cheese in the middle and rolled in thinly sliced ham or other lunch meat. If those are served at a party, that’s where you can find me for the entire evening, LOL!
Ugh! Is the mud turning to cement now, with all the heat?
You just cannot get a break this season! Been there, done that. :(
Tell Mrs. Augie that I’m making Zoodles, tomorrow. Spiralized zucchini that you can use in place of noodles.
It’s one of the few reasons I grow the stuff! ;)
As of today, the answer is: NOT 61! *SMIRK*
Six hours later - The Big Garden is all watered. 1 hour each, moved the sprinkler SIX times. Potatoes, Sweet Corn, Pumpkins, Winter Squash, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Butternut Squash, Sunflowers, Gladiolus, Spaghetti Squash, an extra Zucchini plant and some random Kale is sopping wet and very happy! As am I! Send rain! We desperately NEED it!
Mmmmmmm.......the stuffed wrapped dills sound good.......and no carbs.
I made the Japanese Zucchini Stir Fry this week. It’s SO good! Pictures, later. Thanks again for the reminder. :)
Diana’s Small Batch V-8 Juice Recipe
4 cups chopped tomatoes, seeded, skins on
1 sweet onion, chopped
2 long or 3 short celery ribs, chopped with leaves
1 carrot, peeled & grated
1 green pepper, seeded and chopped
1 tsp. minced Garlic
1 Tbsp. white Sugar
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. prepared Horseradish
1 tsp. Worchestershire Sauce
1 Beef Bullion Cube
1/4 tsp. ground pepper
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Cups water
Put everything in a heavy pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer 20-30 minutes until tender. Cool. SAFETY FIRST: It’s important to cool it COMPLETELY if you’re going to use a regular blender; you’ll blow the top off if it’s hot and you’ll be hating life! With your immersion blender (or in SMALL amounts in a regular blender), blend it all together. Strain through a wire-mesh strainer, pressing all of the juices out. This will make you a 1 quart Mason jar full. Adjust seasonings as you see fit; add hot sauce if you want. I do! Cover and chill and enjoy plain or in a Bloody Mary.
If you want to make a bigger batch, just increase all ingredients incrementally. (Double it, triple it, quadruple it.) Hot Water Bath canning or freezing works just fine.
Turned to cement is exactly what it did.
It’s been a couple seasons since I’ve added a proper amount of stall waste to the soil. I will remedy that before winter comes.

Bad News? I picked cherry tomatoes today and my 'Sungold' tomato plant has evidence of Tomato Horn Worm chewing - but I could NOT find the worm! Grrrrr! Now I'm totally grossed out. :( I looked at ALL the other tomato plants (34 of them!) and no others have been hit as of today.
I have been told that tomato hornworms glow under black light. Haven’t tested that yet, since I haven’t seen any signs they’re in my garden, but I did get a blacklight flashlight just for hunting them with!
We have been DRENCHED. In addition I began a new job - full time, which is not my preference, and I have no idea why I accepted this thing!
So, my “garden” is now officially a protected wild growth area. Fine examples of every variety of naturally occurring indigenous grasses, flowering and otherwise, with a heirloom tomato plant or two, and a few bush Blue Lake green beans growing amongst as a horticultural experiment. It’s a thing to behold!
I’ve heard that about the light - I think it was here, LOL! I’ll see if Beau has one and I’ll look tonight. Going out in a bit to see if he’s active in early morning hours so I can dispatch him post-haste!
*Evil Cackle*
I don’t have them often, but one every once in a while can do more than enough damage!
LOL! Yep. Life changes. Sometimes our gardens suffer, but you have the right attitude! :)
"A significant severe weather outbreak is expected over much of Wisconsin tonight. A squall line of severe thunderstorms or derecho with widespread damaging winds of hurricane force or stronger is possible, along with several tornadoes. Hail and heavy rainfall are possible as well. The highest threat of severe weather will be for areas north of Madison, but there is a significant severe weather threat over all of southern Wisconsin."
We haven't had much rain at all this season, so I guess we're due. Some reason it has to be Feast or Famine? Grrrr! I'm more concerned about the wind, more than anything. crops all over our state look spectacular this season, and I well remember the damage that 'Derecho' did to crops in Iowa last year!
Yep. it’s interesting to behold anyway. I have to run out this weekend and check my apple tree. I hope to have a few apples to make apple butter - in cast iron over a wood fire. So yum!
