ALPENA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A portion of M-32 will be closed for five hours on August 5 as the Air Force practices landing an aircraft on roadways designed for cars and trucks.
According to the Air Force, the plan is to land four A-10 aircraft and two C-146 aircraft on a closed-off portion of the road near the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

Makes it easier to pay a visit to Bible clinching gun owning Americans.
No posse comitatus for you.
Does the Michigan Militia have A-10’s? If not here’s a chance to take delivery. Choke on it Joe.
Why does the article suddenly segue from landings to power outage?
They’re cutting the power to surrounding homes.
I assume in case a power line is nipped.
Beautiful for August 5th…….hope it isn’t very hot that day for the people getting their power turned off……..
I’m not saying it entered my mind.
I’m just not saying it………
Maybe they’re expecting aircraft to fall out of the skies at some point so their practicing in advance. Then again, I though military aircraft were hardened against EMPs.
“I assume in case a power line is nipped.”
That would come off as unprofessional lol and they don’t seem to want any spectators.
Also, no mention of ensuing take(s) off.
Yes, plans are in the works.
Red Dawn invasion by military on bitter clingers to God and guns.
It could be, but I think they need to see how landings do on a 2 lane hwy in “Fly over” country in case us rednecks act up.
Yeah…..LOL…..No spectators! Absolutely No Spectators!
The road will be packed with people now…….
Glad they’re bringing us A-10s………the hunt for redneck pilots begins.
Of course the A-10s can land on a paved roadway. Whether the C-146 can land safely depends on it’s payload and the thickness of the asphalt or concrete on the road. The Air Force already knows the limitations of both aircraft. Why are they doing this on a public road is beyond me.
To bring in lots of troops in short order? Of course they could probably do that with choppers as well.
This area of Northern Michigan is extremely Red.
Not sure if it was chosen because we support our Military or because the new Admin. doesn’t trust us and a show of air power is in order……..
Or possibly they’re thinking about instant airports/runways, so when the big airports/runways are out of commission. I dunno.
The Dept. of Defense was heavily involved in the
early planning of Eisenhower’s interstate highway system.
The movement of vehicles from military installations,
the evacuation of cities,
straight sections of highway for aircraft landings,
ingress and egress to ports, etc.
were all considered in the original construction plans.
C-146 can hold 27 personnel and 6000 pounds of cargo. Not a lot but good for some special operation missions.
Unfortunately, Alpena is not “extremely red”.
