Over 25% of COVID-19 patients report symptoms up to 8 months later, study finds

Researchers say lingering symptoms could put a strain on health care systems

While some health experts say the emergence of the COVID-19 Delta variant may soon lead to a spike in deaths, researchers say severe cases of the virus may not be the only cause for concern. Researchers from the University of Zurich say over a quarter of people who were infected with COVID-19 in 2020 reported feeling lingering symptoms up to eight months after they were first diagnosed. They say the existence of long-term physical and mental health problems could put a strain on health care systems around the world.

“These findings underline the need for the timely planning of healthcare resources and services tailored to the needs of individuals suffering from post-COVID-19 syndrome,” the researchers stated.

Lingering symptoms

The researchers came to their conclusions after analyzing health outcomes in 431 participants who tested positive for COVID-19 between February 2020, and August 2020, and were part of a contact tracing system in Switzerland. Several months after each person’s diagnosis, they completed an online questionnaire about their health.

The researchers found that 26% of the participants reported not feeling fully recovered 6-8 months after they were infected with COVID-19. Just over half (55%) said they still felt symptoms of fatigue, a quarter experienced shortness of breath, and just over a quarter (26%) had symptoms of depression.

Researchers are currently working on solutions for people with lingering COVID-19 symptoms. In late June, researchers were able to mix two monoclonal antibodies to help cure the longest known coronavirus case, which had lasted nearly 300 days. While the treatment has not been approved, the success could inspire future innovations that will help others who still suffer from COVID-19 long after they have recovered from more acute symptoms.

Re: 6

So COVID-19 post-infection effects of other people should reference your experience and consider yours as the reference or baseline?

Think about how that makes you sound.

Those PET scans showing permanently destroyed brain tissue with people having long COVID should be ignored, right?

Those people are making that up.

Or the hospital is making that up.

Or the doctor(s) are making that up.

Because people CAN’T have long COVID.

So says a few idiots on FR that have often equated COVID-19 with nothing more than the flu. For most people, it’s nothing more serious than effects typically seen with the flu. For some, it is more severe.

I’ve had a bit of a runny nose for the longest time, no other symptoms, nothing to go to Emergency about anyway, my COVID moments were relatively mild and short lived..

It could just be pollen, we are dry as heck of late.

When in Roma ,, yada yada

I went
They jabbed
I lived.. (so far)

Until they are hospitalized and dying.

Then they wish they had gotten the vaccine.

1% of the US is 3.3 million people but who cares if they die?
Its the population of Utah.

But hey 99% of those who get covid survive.

It's just a flu.

No, it is not. Not even in the same family of viruses.

Repeating this falsehood over and over again does not make it any more true than the first time you said it.

Moreover, "long haulers" is a very real issue with COVID19. Does your head fit through doorways to know what is going on outside your own door?

I found the effect upon smell very interesting when it was first reported (taste is inextricably linked to smell). We noticed no such thing when we had the virus over a year ago, but can’t say that I didn’t have loss of smell because I’m fighting a fungal sinus issue.

It never made any sense to me until I came to understand the effect of the spike protein. Thus I no longer believe that the virus is the problem (OR a danger), and I seriously doubt that the engineers of this modified spike protein were able to fully appreciate the effects of their creation until it was in the wild.

Must keep the fear, distrust and anger at a boiling-point level ... there is still much to be done before capitalism and the American Republic are fully “transformed” as the former 3M president (mulatto-marxist-muslim) committed to back in 2008.

The point of a study is to get statistically significant results. Duh.
