High potency weed linked to psychotic episodes, mysterious vomiting illness in young users

The condition — officially called "cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome" but now known to health care workers as "scromiting," a mashup of "screaming" and "vomiting" — has popped up with increasing frequency at hospitals in Colorado, doctors say.

“The only thing that convinced me was that it stopped when I stopped smoking,” said Gribbon, now 20.

“We use up a lot of medical resources to see if there is anything more seriously wrong with them,”

Scromiting cases have increased as pot has become far more powerful, according to doctors. Experts say the marijuana consumed 20 years ago had levels of THC, the main psychoactive ingredient, of 2 percent to 3 percent, but cannabis products now sold in markets like Colorado can have THC levels as high as 90 percent.

An increasing share of Colorado’s $2 billion cannabis market is made up of concentrates or other products with high levels of THC

You can’t fix stupid. I’m growing it legally now but I don’t use it. I figured you shouldn’t put those things together. I did try Delta 8. It’s just a body high. Good for getting to sleep.

I have some hemp hashish. That stuff will get you high but it mellows you out.

—” I’m growing it legally now “

My father totally enjoyed working in his garden and after retiring from the Navy he expanded it to a quarter acre.

But what to grow? Finding enough zucchini users can be difficult.
He would attempt most requests and never turned down a seed packet. Late 1960s early 1970s.

The neighbor’s high school kids provided him with some “herb” seeds and they grew like wild.

My sister and I saw it as don’t-don’t tell.

Our mother was an artist/teacher who may have tried some of the “herbs” in pasta and did not care for the flavor?

To this day we still wonder if the Oldman knew?

—”drinking Everclear 95% alcohol is a bad idea for kids too.”

The question is are humans predisposed to alcohol? In our DNA or just as a social event?

Most have heard about American Indian problems when I was in Asia drunks were not that obvious.
I think most Asians turn beet red with a few drinks and avoid it?

—”Everclear”

Long ago something that was claimed to be Everclear was sold in aspirin bottles, cheap.

It was not unusual to see the users unconscious(?) in the hallway of the dorm.

Glad to be a lifelong near teetotaller.

One of the advantages of retiring to a college\university town you can go and attend presentations by the local scholars as well as visiting ones. So I went and attended a talk by some researchers from the Neuroscience Center.

According to the speaker even one session with a recreational drug like pot permanently rewires connections. The rewiring is mostly meaningless, in some (yes a very small number!) its not. The more use the more rewiring again for mostly still meaningless, the threshold of the rewiring changing behavior is never reached. (Aside: As an anecdotal example I knew people who came back from Nam who were heroin users in Nam. The minute they hit the states, they stopped. No dramatic action, no rehab, no intervention etc. They just stopped! Yes their story, but I knew them well enough to give it credence.) But for each use again a small number of that population have their behavior modified. And so on !

I have always heard of the psychological term “addictive personalities”. Meaning a personality primed to react toward some sort of addition, gambling, sex, TV watching, thrill seeking (adrenaline rush!), cigarettes, pot, etc. This talk provided a possible physical reason for that term. Could it just be "confirmation bias" on my part? Maybe ? But maybe not ! So no not a stretch, or a leap or anything like that. Just thinking about new information, observing and integrating in personal information, observations and experiences. Yes my "speculative conclusion" could be wrong. If I get new information and its relevant I am open to changing my conclusion. !

Anyway it makes you think !

My next door neighbor was a WW2 flyer (bombers and fighters) and when his dad died, they found a grow operation in the basement. Considering the smell, I can’t imagine how he hid it.

I think everyone in this county has grown it at some point according to the workmen who have been coming in and out of the house. I got lots of good advice when they were installing flooring

The question is are humans predisposed to alcohol? In our DNA or just as a social event?

Since there are no specific receptors in the human body for alcohol and there are cannabinoid receptors in all humans the answer is obviously "no."

The fact that some particular genetic lines of people have more tolerance for alcohol than others does not suggest a "predisposition" to drinking alcohol. It suggests a heritage from a line of people who drank enough alcohol to weed out those who had little tolerance to it.

Funny, though, people of African descent, who have little or no history of alcohol use in their line of descent, don't seem to have the same low tolerance to it that Native Americans have.

I used to puke my guts out after two six packs and half a pint of vodka.

But that was 31 years ago.

I don’t live that way anymore. One day at a time now.

Heroin also has its medical benefits. But we’re not talking about medicinal use in this article, are we?

Heroin has no medicinal use. I was giving an opinion on the fact marijuana does have medicinal properties, that’s all.

Never saw that in the ER I work in but then I’m not a doctor or a nurse. We do get lots of meth heads and drunks though.

Lot of women. Wild, out of control. Have to be restrained, boy can they put up a fight!

The area around the hospital I work in is pretty much smack in the middle of the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

Lots of homeless encampments all through it. Some crazy folks living in there. Young kids used to like to go four wheeling , riding their dirt bikes all through the woods but not so much anymore. Too many crazies living in there. Never understand how people who are homeless, not working and literally camping out in trackless pine forests always have money for drugs and booze.

Thanks Mom MD. Fact was I got tired of being sick and tired all the time.

My greatest joy was that I sobered up before my mother passed away. I really put her through hell.

Her father was a no good, wife beating drunk. My mother was an OR nurse and an OR nursing supervisor.

Sadly though it was soon after she retired that she began that ‘’long good night’’ into Alzheimer’s.

Miss her everyday.

Yeah. They sure do find a way. But jeez, these folks have regular little encampments in the New Jersey Pine Barrens for Heavens sake. I'm talking little ‘’communities''. And well meaning souls from church groups and the Ocean County welfare agencies do out reach but still, it's some rough living. The Pines cover about a quarter of the lower half of NJ.

Of course you can walk your way out into the city of Toms River and surrounding towns and go dumpster diving but you've got to do a bit of hiking through the brush and the woods.

Heroin could easily be used in place of morphine if needed. It is also so similar to what is used by veterinarians that you might as well just call it that. And as far as medical uses for marijuana, you can take out everything that gets you high and still get the same benefits. So what’s the only point in smoking it? Not for the medicinal properties.
