3,000-year-old inscription bearing name of biblical judge found in Israel [Jerubbaal inscription]

An inscription dating back some 3,100 years ago bearing the name of a biblical judge Jerubbaal was uncovered in the excavations at Khirbat er-Ra‘i, near Kiryat Gat in the Southern District of Israel, the Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced on Monday.

The researchers highlighted that while there cannot be any certainty on whether the inscription refers to the figure mentioned in the Book of Judges, this discovery offers important insights on the connection between the biblical text and historical reality...

All the dating has been carried out through both pottery typology and radiocarbon of organic samples found in the same archaeological layer.

The writing, inked on a jug, marks the first time that the name Jerubbaal has been found outside the biblical text. It is believed that the owner penned his name on the jug.

"The name Jerubbaal is familiar from biblical tradition in the Book of Judges as an alternative name for the judge Gideon ben Yoash," according to Prof. Yosef Garfinkel and archeologist Sa‘ar Ganor from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem...

"Gideon is first mentioned as combating idolatry by breaking the altar to Baal and cutting down the Asherah pole," they explained. "In biblical tradition, he is then remembered as triumphing over the Midianites, who used to cross over the Jordan to plunder agricultural crops. According to the Bible, Gideon organized a small army of 300 soldiers and attacked the Midianites by night near Ma'ayan Harod." ...

Khirbat er-R'i is located close to an important archaeological site, where a center, Lachish, often featured in the Bible, once stood... According to the Book of Joshua, shortly afterwards it was destroyed by the Israelites as they conquered the Land of Israel at the end of their wanderings in the desert following their Exodus from Egypt.

My favorite bible pun is Luke 10:18:
“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

“lightning from heaven” in Aramaic (which is probably the language in which Jesus said this phrase) sounds like this:

lightening =Barack
heaven (or the High Place)= Bama.

So,

“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”

could sound just like:

“I saw Satan fall like Barack au bama”.

One of those crazy coincidences, I guess. LOL.

As far as that book is concerned, I don’t think the purchase of it was impulsive, at all. I think it was driven by curiosity. I mean, why else does one buy books? It is a VERY good read!! I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

I’ve read it twice and will be reading it again when I begin to unpack my books. These days, most of my book-buying is confined to religious history. I can’t recall the last fiction I bought, but I do buy history and biographies.

Most of my books are purchased at eBay or other online bookstores.

If you don’t mind, let me know what you think of it and whether you would recommend it to others.

The thread inspired me to listen to “The White Album” (on YT) in its entirety. It is the digitally remastered version from 2009, and even though I haven’t listened in over a half-century, I find the remastered version lacking in the warmth and nuance of the original vinyl. (Yes...I remember the sound as well as all the lyrics and harmonies)

Of course, the last time I heard this was on a Marantz Turntable with a Harmon-Karden amp pumping the signal into Dad’ dishwasher-sized Altec-Lansing Voice-of-the-Theater Speakers with 15” Woofers, and High Frequency Horns rockin the neighborhood off its foundations.

A far cry from the whiny digital signal coming out of my computer speakers.

Those Were The Days.

“Nothing that is found that has to do with Biblical history surprises me.”

I remember an article written after the Soviet Union fell about one of Russia’s top scientists taking the opportunity to finally study the bible. When asked why he would do such a thing he replied that the communists banned it for a reason and he wanted to know the reason. When asked if he thought the bible held any truth his reply was that he could find nothing in science to deny the words of the bible and he found much in the bible that bolstered science. I can’t remember his name, that was a while back. Incidentally the scientist had met underground Christians and had been baptized and attended services at the drop of a hat.

In another instance Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the AK-47 and it’s variants, became a Christian after the Soviet Union fell. He worried that he would be judged by God because his rifle had been used to do so much evil. It took the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church to calm his fears. He had designed a weapon to defend his country, what was done with it in other lands was on the heads of the politicians who sold the rifles. Kalashnikov died six months later.

“A far cry from the whiny digital signal coming out of my computer speakers.”

I feel the same way when I listen to music on my computer. I usually burn it to CD and play it on my trucks CD player when I, all too infrequently, drive somewhere.
Digitally remastered is okay but I sometimes find myself missing the hissing, popping and cracking of vinyl. Must be me bemoaning my long lost youth.

I still have a CD player in my car, and have been struggling with my new computer which doesn’t want to burn cds for me.

It’s been an ongoing struggle.

Meanwhile, Vintage Vinyl of certain titles in Good Condition are fetching BIG BUCKS, so you are not alone.

Did Judge Jerubbeal have a TV show? If not, Judge Joe Brown, Judge Judy and Judge Mabel should be the only judges in the Book! - A Liberal... 🤓

:^) In Tolkien, Earendil, the Flammifer of Westernesse, represents Orvandel (or Orvandel's Toe, oddly enough), a Teutonic version of Venus. Sorry, it's hard to remain on topic sometimes. ;^)
