The pandemic-delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics will take place under a coronavirus state of emergency, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshide Suga confirmed Thursday.
Speaking at the start of the government's Covid-19 task force meeting, Suga said he had decided to declare a new state of emergency for the capital from July 12 to August 22 -- covering the 16 days of the embattled Games in its entirety.
"The number of infected cases in the area including Tokyo has been increasing since the end of last month," Suga said. "The number of severe cases and bed occupancy rate continues to be on the low level, but considering the impact of variants, we need to enhance countermeasures so that the infection will not spread nationwide."
Suga added that a ban on serving alcohol in restaurants will continue during the state of emergency.
The decision comes as media reports in the country said the general public was expected to be banned from the opening ceremony in two weeks time and as Tokyo reported 920 new infections for Wednesday -- the highest daily caseload since the middle of May.
"There is a remarkable increase of infections especially in the big cities in the Tokyo area," said Yasutoshi Nishimura, the minister in charge of the country's pandemic response. The more infectious Delta variant now accounts for up to 30% of cases, he added.

Apparently, national suicide is happening in the East too.
All the competitions will be held on Zoom.
I wonder if this is really to cover up the embarrassment of low attendance.
Wait til they see their dismal viewership. Who wants to watch a bunch of athletes protest America.
Anyone see the video out of Picadilly Circus last night?
Note to Japan: Grow a pair.
At least the Euros are getting fans finally. Over 60,000 at Wembley yesterday.
Refs gave that game to England. I haven't seen somebody dive that good since Greg Louganis.
I didn’t watch the game.
But I loved the celebrations!
Note to footy fans: Great to see you having a wonderful time, but pick up after yourselves next time, k? :-)
One of the most xenophobic countries — “no whites allowed” businesses are not uncommon. The China virus a justification for the stranger hate that remains just below the surface of Japanese society.
The Japan government to this day has not formally apologized for their prewar and WWII atrocities. School textbooks do not admit to the wrongdoing, but instead present the Japanese people as victims of circumstance.
That will work.
Or when the Godzilla variant arrives and rearranges Tokyo Harbor. Hopefully the little girls in the bird cage are on retainer, just in case.
I have to admit...I've always loved the Olympics. I'm a sucker for pomp and tradition, which the Olympics is chock full of. I especially love it when an American wins an event...getting to hear the National Anthem played, honoring the country and the individual or team that won. But this time....it just seems pointless. We don't know, when an American wins an event, if they're going to honor their country on the podium or defile it. It's utterly sad to me.
