The highly transmissible delta variant is now the dominant strain of the coronavirus in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.
As of July 3, the latest date for which data was available, the delta variant accounted for 51.7 percent of new Covid-19 cases that had been genetically sequenced in the country. Two weeks earlier, on June 19, the variant accounted for just over 30 percent of new cases.
During a news briefing Tuesday, President Joe Biden cited the delta variant's rapid spread to urge people to get vaccinated, "especially young people who may have thought that they didn't have to be vaccinated, didn't have to worry about it, didn't have to do anything about it."
"This should cause everybody to think twice," Biden said.
Studies have shown that the Covid-19 vaccines are effective against multiple variants, including the delta variant. A recent report from Public Health England, where delta accounts for more than 90 percent of new cases, found two doses of the Pfizer vaccine to be 96 percent effective against hospitalization.
In addition to the U.S., the delta variant has been detected in 103 countries and is predicted to become the dominant variant globally.
"Based on the estimated transmission advantage of the delta variant, it is expected that delta will rapidly outcompete other variants and become the dominant circulating lineage over the coming months," the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

Well, good. Infection with the delta variant confers immunity to all variants of COVID-19 (just as other variants confer that âuniversalâ immunity). If delta spreads faster, that merely serves to more quickly strengthen herd immunity in areas where herd immunity has not yet been established completely.

Daily cases have gradually risen since, reaching 344 cases on July 4. The number of seriously ill rose to 35 on July 4 from 21 on June 19, according to data from the ministry.

The rise in Covid among the vaccinated is actually harm caused by the vaccine being passed off as 'variants'. Having another shot will only sicken and kill more people.
Dr. Yeadon, former Chief Science Officer for Pfizerâs Allergy and Infectious Diseases division, said that a researcher located those whoâd had SARS1 in 2003 and tested them this year, with that original SARS1 virus. Those people were still immune, after 17 years.
The researcher then tested those people with SARS2 (Covid). Those people were immune. There is âonlyâ a 22% difference in the genomes between Sars1 and Sars2 and so immunity held.
But note those ill in 2003 did not maintain active antibodies for 17 years. Their immune sytem hibernated those (my words) antibodies until it recognized the pathogen from years ago and began producing antibodies.
There are two wings to the immune system and Big Pharma is focusing on âactive antibodiesâ as if that is an accurate indicator of immunity. It actually means âactivated immunityâ, when you may have immunity but havenât been exposed in so long you donât have the antibodies.
Dr. Yeadon says the âvariantsâ are no more than 1% or 2% different from Covid and those whoâve had Covid will be immune to the variants.
