Young Americans need to appreciate the good fortune they take for granted

A friend of mine who immigrated to the United States from one of the poorest countries in the world, Haiti, once joked to me, “Do you know why I love the US? Toilet.” He laughs easily. He grew up without one. His family didn’t have electricity until he was a teenager.

At the age of 7, my Polish step-grandfather and his family were taken at night by Stalin’s secret police to the Siberian labor camps, after the Soviets and Nazis partitioned the country in 1939, simply because his father was a low-level military officer in Poland. Over six years with his family in the prison camps, he saw — and smelled — hundreds of people drop dead from starvation, exhaustion and disease around him. Somehow he made it out alive and fled to the US. Tens of millions of Soviet prisoners never had that chance.

An old college professor of mine who was born under a communist police state in the Czech Republic used to preach to his American students studying abroad in Prague, “Yours is the country of individual freedom. You should be proud of what it has given the world.” He and his countrymen have now enjoyed decades of relative prosperity and freedom under the Pax Americana.

But, as we approach another Independence Day, why are fewer Americans proud of that legacy? And why do many of us often think what we have here — wealth, freedom and safety — is normal in the course of human history or even in the world today? A little perspective is in order.

If they're never taught it, they'll never know it and from everything I can glean ... the public school system is not teaching America .... period.

96% of America has comer through, and will GO through, the public school system.

Sadly, you are correct. It seems a lot of them have zero clue about history or sacrifice and a lot of them have zero desire to learn it. Sacrifice to them is their cell phone going dead and not being near a charger. Not THAT is rough.

I heard a story that Boris Yeltsin visited an American supermarket and wept for his people. He couldn’t imagine such opulence being available for working people. My yellow lab has a higher standard of living than the majority of mankind. My house has electricity and hot running water. My family has never been hungry. I have never lost a child to disease. I personally have survived three illnesses that would have been fatal in most places in the world. I have two cars. Until recently, I have never feared my government. And yet young people are working hard to throw all of this way. It’s astonishing.

“the public school system is not teaching America .... period.”

Teachers purposely do not teach it. They are leftist minions, intentionally (leftist hearts) and unintentionally (ignorant, lazy, college-indoctrinated).

Teachers took in and grew the NEA to what it is today — huge and leftist.
(Gimmedat raise, days off and gold health insurance.)

Teachers stood silent when God was taken out of pubic schools.
(Gimmedat raise, days off and gold health insurance.)

Teachers allowed the NEA to turn leftist, feminist, queer and now CRT pushers.
(Gimmedat raise, days off and gold health insurance.)

Teachers’ union dues and NEA support leftist Democrat and their policies.
(Gimmedat raise, days off and gold health insurance.)

Teachers’ unions join with other unions to push votes for D’rats and union-preferred school board members.
(Gimmedat raise, days off and gold health insurance.)

Teachers’ role in swinging America left is undeniable and indefensible.

Leftist love to say “first world problems!” Yes, the first world, brought about by capitalism—though not the current corrupt crony capitalism brought about by leftists worming their way into boardrooms across the country.

Yes, they do. Or try a a country that was formerly communist. It’s been twenty years since I spent time there, but outside the large cities, no running water in Russia. You had to go up the street to a communal tap to get water, and everyone sneaked out after dark to dump their dirty bath water in their neighbors’ gardens. Toilet facilities? A row of outhouses over a trench — the stench incredible! Padlocks on the doors to prevent TP theft.

18-29 years-olds in 2013 were under the delusion that Obama was lifting us out of some make believe abyss, while that age group in 2018 were told America was a hellhole.

Furthermore, Deplorable 18-29 year-olds in 2018 were smart enough to hang up etc when some random stranger asked them for their political views while their statist brethren can't keep their big fat narcissistic yappers shut, thus forcing an unbalanced sampling of that age group. I bet if that silent lot was included, the trend would be flat.

My encounters with that age bracket aren't as depressing as the MSM want you to believe. Yes, there are stupid ones. But there are a great number of really smart, driven kids who don't hate America. Even the centrists I've met just want to get on with their life and career. These youngsters often have side gigs in addition to their main gig, are laser-focused in what they want, and are a little stressed. That's not the image the MSM wants you to have - they'd prefer for you to think the West is lost.

But, as we approach another Independence Day, why are fewer Americans proud of that legacy?

Because the uniqueness and good of this country - the freest most prosperous country ever in the history of the world - are not being taught in the schools.

Instead, the Zinn version of history is being disseminated K-university that the U.S. is an evil, racist, homophobic and oppressive country - and now White children are being taught that to hate themselves and that they are irredeemable racists.

An evil, false narrative is being disseminated via Hollywood, the media, television, and most importantly, the schools. These fools have NO idea what is being destroyed and what we stand to lose...or maybe they do.

I knew a guy from Ethiopia whose family escaped the Communist regime when he was a teenager. He spoke of his shock and amazement at how much was taken for granted by American teens...and this was 40 years ago!

Do the youth have it that great today given what they are being taught and limits on what they can say in our schools?

Remember the line attributed to Patton, talking down self-immolation and talking up making the enemy the casualty. There are MILLIONS of young people who voted for Trump, who have jobs, who love their country, who (contrary to what the MS wants you to think) are NOT rage-quitting society over blacks or gays (that generation is fairly live-and-let-live).

These kids also realize that it'd be suicide to risk career, livelihood, and personal safety to do what Kyle did...if an armed burglar breaks into a conservative GenZers home saying "society is to blame for my life and give me your jewelry" the GenZer will shoot the bad guy in mid sentence, but the avg conservative GenZer knows better than to go looking for trouble in this day and age. Better to lay low, make some dough, stay out of trouble, pay lip-service to stupidity, but keep the candle burning...it'll turn around.

I'm not saying there is NO cause for concern. There are plenty of youths that are are loony. But my elders thought GenXers were flannel-wearing self-indulgent whiners and we generally turned out ok. Age has a way of refining the idiocy of youth, like time and pressure turn coal into a diamond.

Swear allegiance to the flag,
Whatever flag they offer;
Never hint at what you really feel.
Teach the children quietly,
For, someday, sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still.

It is astonishing. But you can excuse young people, I guess, by pointing out that they’re just parroting what they have learned - from their schools, from the media, even from their churches in some cases.

So it’s the cumulative effect of years of leftist thought all distilling down into this generation.

But what I don’t understand is what person in their right mind would think the leftist message is good to begin with. It’s all about having less...less prosperity, less material comfort, less freedom, less happiness.

Happiness is in our Delcaration of Independence. So maybe that’s why they hate it.

Luck (i.e., "good fortune") only comes to pass when preparation comes together with opportunity. America's greatness has little to do with "luck" and a great deal more to do with Americans having made the preparations and acting when opportunity presented itself.

Or as Shakespeare said, "There is a tide in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life. Is bound in shallows and in miseries."
