Tour de France Fan Will Face Trial for Role in Crash (IDENTIFIED, will be prosecuted)

The spectator whose cardboard sign sent riders tumbling to the road was charged with reckless endangerment and involuntarily causing injuries.

A Tour de France spectator on the side of the road held up a sign that hit the German rider Tony Martin. He fell and caused a pileup of dozens of more.

Camille Miansoni, the prosecutor in Brest, France, who had opened an investigation into the case, said that the spectator, a 30-year-old French woman, had been released from police custody pending her trial. She turned herself in on Wednesday.

The charges under consideration carry a possible one year prison term, depending on the severity of the cyclists’ injuries, and a fine of 15,000 euros, or nearly $18,000, but a prison term is thought to be unlikely.

“Narrow roads are ok on mountain stages when the peloton (the main pack of riders)”

That’s really cheesy that the tour started calling it a peleton by stealing it from that online exercise bike company.

Not her fault. Safety negligence on the part of the organizers. Surprised it hasn’t happened before.

The Tour de France organizers want a race but can't figure out how to paint zebra stripe areas along each side of the road along the course to create a "no-man's land" that both spectators and cyclists are not allowed in.

A simple question to the organizers in court, "did you take precautions to protect both spectators and cyclists such as striping along the course?" "Why not, did you deem it too expensive?"

The mind boggles.

Somebody knows what an intransitive verb is.

The term “peloton” was used in the Tour de France long before the peloton exercise machines came along. I think the exercise bakes were named after the cycling term. Or were you being sarcastic?

They should just drop this. I agree.

If you can charge a spectator for doing something stupid, it would make sense to me you could charge a racer for doing something stupid and causing a pile up.

Ditto Re get in the hole. Encouraging the ball after the player’s participation has ceased? Idiocy.

Without naming name a rider cause a crash by not paying full attention when going over a speed bump.

To your point.

Should he be charged with reckless endangerment?

Thank you for that.   I was just thinking that I finally understood the emotions that insipid Peloton commercial was intending to bring forth.   The excitement of a bicycle race, I said to myself while laughing myself into convulsions.

They could have started a company and called it "Detergent" to sell us all on the excitement of washing dishes and doing the laundry.

That was my immediate reaction as well. Without that guidance, someone is bound to create a hazard.

"Especially when bicyclists are world renown for their courtesy and consideration for others."

I'm thinking of getting a T-Shirt emblazoned with "Allez Opi Omi" to wear while as a pedestrian I'm dodging bicyclists on the sidewalk.

Was that wrong? Should she not of done that? Was there a warning sign not to hold a large cardboard sign while turning your back to the riders?

It turns out there is some evil person killing pelotons on the beaches of San Diego.

I hope they catch him before he kills any more of them.

They may be ugly, but they are still living beings.

Meanwhile, the women who collaborated with nazis merely had their heads shorn and were paraded topless through the streets when Paris was liberated in 1944.

It's hard to not see her as just as bad as the Nazis, she practically wiped out an entire race of people.

“The incident has been blown out of all proportion,”

So if you are a rider who got badly injured and had to drop out of the race, no big deal. Roadside fans, just be careful.

The riders must love this guy.

I took a look of the video the of the crash. I didn’t see anything that suggested malicious intent to whack the cyclists. If they can charge spectators for causing bad crashes, charging race participants isn’t far behind

This repeated crap about just hitting the sign is false.

I repeatedly watched the video from the camera angle viewing the sign face-on with the riders oncoming...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld1oakfq6xw

You can see clearly at the :01 mark, the woman’s got her arm behind the sign, with her hand holding the bottom edge way out in the roadway. Tony Martin didn’t fall because he hit the sign; he went down because he hit her arm, which I’m surprised isn’t broken. Watch HER as the crash happens. Her arm gets flung back across her body, she gets spun around, her hat flies off...

It wasn’t her wimpy cardboard sign that caused the carnage.

Not EVEN.

At the :02 second mark, you see Martin grimace as he impacts her arm, his handlebars twist to the right, throwing his entire bike off-line, his front tire slips off the pavement edge into the grass on the verge, he loses traction, and the bike goes down beneath him initiating a chain reaction that takes down an entire wedge of the peloton, which is in the video at about the 3:30 mark.

She oughta see jail time and/or hefty fines for Reckless Endangerment or some such similar charge.
