King Rose Archives

Fins were in as the car companies turned out to show their their new cars to a vibrant America that had a hankering for all things shiny, large and powerful.

Buicks, Cadillacs, Plymouths and the Ford Skyliner stole the show with no competition from the imports.

"And yet they do it all the time and it's never an improvement. It always ruins it."

It's change for change's sake. New people in executive roles feel a compulsion to put their personal brand on things, just to say they personally made a difference. There are some rare innovators that really do change things for the better, but many fall into what I have come to refer to as, "square wheel visionaries."

They are given a position of power and authority (usually undeserved) and cultivate the image of being forward looking, "out of the box," thinkers. So they come up with brainstorms like, "Why on earth are we still using round wheels? People have been using round wheels for thousands of years! Round wheels are obsolete. We are going to start using square wheels moving forward!"

And so they implement sweeping change, and put their name on it. Then when the idea fails (sometimes catastrophically) they usually shrug it off saying the industry/market/stockholders etc. weren't ready for the idea yet, and walk away with a sizeable severance package.

The building where the auto show took place was demolished a long time ago and replaced by the Time Warner Center, home of the worst Whole Foods in the United States.

Lol! Yes, I know. The only thing I buy at Whole Foods are the bagels. The rest is vastly overpriced bland "gourmet" type garbage. The sort of stuff rich Liberals in all their bad taste consume. Even the roasted chicken they prepare there isn't very good. No flavor. No salt, or any other kind of noticeable seasoning on it. I live less than a mile uptown of there.

I had a black ‘57 Chevy 4 door straight 6 (210 I think), from 1974-77.

And of course as you, "Clemenza", well know, Columbus Circle is the site of the 1971 Joe Colombo shooting.

BTW, Did you know that the actor who played Pete Clemenza in the Godfather is said to have been the nephew of former Gambino boss Paul Castelleno?

_______________

"Richard Salvatore Castellano (September 4, 1933 – December 10, 1988) was an American actor who is best remembered for his role in Lovers and Other Strangers and his subsequent role as Pete Clemenza in The Godfather.[1][2][3]

Biography

Castellano was born in the Bronx, a borough of New York City, to an Italian Catholic family. According to Castellano’s widow, he was the nephew of Gambino crime family boss Paul Castellano.[3][4] ...”

Overpriced, underpowered, slow, fumbling introduction.

The Chrysler “letter cars” are some of the most beautiful cars ever built in the U.S.

Agree, and the early ones (late ‘50s) were the fastest American production cars. In top speed, anyway. I’m partial to the ‘56 B.

I like the 58 D. Dad had one in the shop that was involved in a fender bender when I was a kid. Black with red interior, 392 hemi and dual quads. Awesome car!
