It's change for change's sake. New people in executive roles feel a compulsion to put their personal brand on things, just to say they personally made a difference. There are some rare innovators that really do change things for the better, but many fall into what I have come to refer to as, "square wheel visionaries."
They are given a position of power and authority (usually undeserved) and cultivate the image of being forward looking, "out of the box," thinkers. So they come up with brainstorms like, "Why on earth are we still using round wheels? People have been using round wheels for thousands of years! Round wheels are obsolete. We are going to start using square wheels moving forward!"
And so they implement sweeping change, and put their name on it. Then when the idea fails (sometimes catastrophically) they usually shrug it off saying the industry/market/stockholders etc. weren't ready for the idea yet, and walk away with a sizeable severance package.
