“Where should we eat tomorrow?” my wife asked me excitedly as we sat on our deck Friday evening.
She had locked down a babysitter for Saturday night, and we were both eager for our first dinner date alone together in months.
“Broders’,” I answered without hesitation.
Located in southwest Minneapolis, Broders Pasta Bar is a local gem. It has a great outdoor patio and the best Italian cuisine in the Twin Cities. We had not eaten there since the pandemic began.
My wife nodded and started to make a reservation on her phone. Then her jaw dropped.
“You’re not going to like this,” she said.
On its website, Broders’ has a notice to customers notifying them of a new 15 percent “benefits and equity” charge they’ve instituted. They justify the charge, first, by explaining that “many states have allowed reduced minimum wages for service staff in the form of a tip credit.” (More on this in a minute.)
The restaurant’s second justification is that many tippers are racist and sexist, according to uncited research.
“Studies have also shown that there is inequity and built-in bias in the way consumers give tips,” the statement reads. “In general, Black or Brown servers receive less tips than Caucasian servers. There is gender bias as well.”
The final part of the statement says the new policy stems from wider racial injustice and is not a substitute for gratuity.
“In the wake of racial injustice protests and the closures due to Covid, now is the time for Broders’ to reimagine its economics and provide fair pay across the company,” the statement reads. “Our Benefits & Equity Charge is applied entirely to employee compensation. This supplement helps us to set a $16 minimum hourly wage for customer facing employees, $18 minimum hourly wage for kitchen employees… Altogether this allows everyone in our company to earn a real living wage. The 15% Benefits & Equity Charge is not a gratuity.”
Endless and things we can't even think of. Example, I was reading an article advocating for Biden to declare a climate emergency so he could assume the dictatorial powers of some governors. They wanted climate shutdowns. They suggested that people be issue cards with a carbon balance and if you saved carbon, you might get additional freedoms. If you used too much carbon, you would be restricted including not being able to travel, leave your house without a “moral” reason, etc. The Left has no end to where they are going. You are just property of the state to do with whatever they want.
As I see it, they can’t do too much without controlling law enforcement FIRST.

I’ve noticed certain groups that give a lot of grief when I’m out. There are very few blacks here, and the ones I know are normal good people, but here it’s the filipinos. They come as foreign workers, then they start taking over. Most have decent family values etc, but when they start getting a lot in one area, they start pecking at each other for who gets the top spot and fight over very petty things. In the restaurants, they demand great service and often won’t leave anything, or if they do it’s minimal.
I don’t understand that mentality. If it’s too expensive, or you don’t want to pay, stay home and eat.
These insane ‘equity’ BS charges only happen in these liberal crapholes, most of red state America has returned to normal.

The Ceo to low level employee pay ratio was in the double digits in the 50s to the four digits in today’s world. That is an issue that I am not sure of the best way to deal with, and I don’t have a problem if some companies want to pay their servers more etc, just find the money in the company without charging more, or I’m probably leaving.
Dr. Thomas Sowell has discussed this phenomena many times.
I test servers when I’m out lately.
If I’m asked what colour bread I’d like with an order, I always say White is right please.
I usually get some laughs, and I had one serious scowl. I note the place and don’t go back.

That was my experience from 40 years ago.
But, things may have changed.
Evidently the “blacks not tipping” trope is alive and well. LOL. That was definitely my experience, my wife’s experience, and my kids’ experience.

I’d do something similar, I wouldn’t take it out on the server, but I would not comply nor go quietly.
So far I haven’t noticed anything too out of place, but I’m keenly watching as I always am (vigilance against commies is not a part time job) and if I notice anything, then it’s game time.
Yes, it would be interesting to read a follow up on this place a year from now.
Leave them a George Floyd counterfeit tip that is 100% of the bill. That should be equity friendly and in full honor of the the fine racebaiters in the BLM movement
we had a server frown at us for ordering black coffee. She said “ it’s plain. just say plain”
we said no coffee, or dessert, just the check now, thanks.
