They don’t last forever. $1-6K according to this site. Life is variable depending on use of course.

The batteries cst as much as the damn car and NO they do not last forever by the time you get the $80,000 car paid of you will probably have to replace the batteries!! A HUGE boom for the auto industry!! Of course the CCP comes out way ahead too they make the batteries!!

Maybe this is the pickup for city folks, but if Ford thinks people who actually use their trucks to haul stuff especially in rural areas are going to buy them think again. Imagine a rancher whose ranch is 30 miles from town and who uses his pickup to haul feed, fencing and other ranch supplies in the dead of winter with temperatures below freezing. Will there be a convenient charger in a town population 800? Will this pickup carry a load of half a ton and make it back to the ranch before it runs out of charge? Consider a busy contractor who uses his truck to haul heavy loads of supplies to job sites. Will the electric truck need a 45 min to one hour charge in the middle of the day at a charging station convenient to the job site? How about the person who buys a pickup to haul a large boat. Will they need to charge up one or more times before they reach the lake?

I do not expect this electric truck to be in production for more than a few years if that.

Not unless it has onboard energy production rather than just storage.

It’s my only real grip with EV’s...

Give me something that produces between 300-400BHP and fills up in around 10 minutes or less that I can drive at least 400 miles with all of the accessories running in a Minnesota winter.

My 2011 Expedition already does this BTW...

I’ve wondered the same thing myself. Had the idea while swapping propane tanks to be refilled for my gas grill...

All aboard. If you can't get a Lighting get a Biden.

Pricing is expected to range from $42,000 for the soon-to-be-announced base model to up to around $90,000 for a loaded Platinum model.

> How much do new batteries cost? Or do they last forever? <

Don’t worry about that. China controls most of the world’s battery production. So batteries will always be available, and at a reasonable price...just don’t upset China in any way.

But should you upset China, better figure out a way to attach a team of horses to the front of your electric car.

I have a ‘10 Expedition with the 5.4 triton.

I pull a 6,500 lb travel trailer across south Texas in near 100 degrees. It has 280K miles on it and it still runs well.

I can’t see how an EV could do that.

10K lbs. The capacity is unlikely changed whether it’s 2x4 or 4x4 as each wheel is powered by its own motor. There are no drive-shafts, differentials or transfer cases in most EV applications. Porsche is the only current production EV that employs any kind of gearbox (a two-speed gearbox, I believe). The rest, including the Lightening, are all direct-drive electric motors.

Car & Driver estimates the range at max-towing capacity is likely to be roughly 100-mile.

Don’t forget range when actually towing something substantial.

matt04 :" Which is actually on the lower end of some of today’s chargers, for hours on end while these cars charge.
In reality, these won’t be sporadic uses, but huge demands every night around 6 o’clock or so
when everyone gets home and plugged in their cars "

I wonder what the power drop is when AC/DC gets converted into a battery.
There has to be some drop during the conversion process, due to the resistance of storage into a battery, Rite ?

The reason why power companies converted from DC into AC was that there was power drop along all the transmission lines when there was only DC current.
The power drop increased significantly the further away you were from the generating source.
The power drop occurred due to the resistance in the transmission lines.
The same power drop should occur in the conversion into a battery.

it can charge from 15 percent to 80 percent of battery capacity in 44 minutes.

So, let's use the worse case scenario: 15% in 44 minutes. To fully charge the vehicle would take: 4.9 hours.

Ford claims a driving range of 230 miles per charge; upgrading to the larger pack boosts driving range to 300 miles.

230 miles is a 3 hour trip on the interstate (300 is 4 hours). What the time would be in stop and go traffic is anybody's guess.

I'm going to assume the 4.9 hour charge time is for the 230 mile driving range. For the 300 mile range battery it would be: 6.4 hours.

I just bought a new Dodge Ram ‘Built for Service’ in diesel. 29 MPG right now and a range of nearly 1,000 miles with a 33 gallon tank.

I’m pretty sure a Ford metrosexual electric aluminum ‘truck’ is of no interest to me.

I agree with the premise of the article. The fact that the biggest selling vehicle in the country is going electric is a huge deal.

Like the Mustang Mach-E, this looks like it’s going to provide considerable value for people in the EV market, or people who might prospectively be in the EV market. The overall range in this Lightening package is also impressive. Considering the vast majority of P/U drivers who never tow anything, I don’t think the towing range penalty is going to be a material factor for most buyers.

The key is power generation. Right now, to get the same (roughly) equivalent horsepower you would need a generator producing around 300KW.

That’s a LOT of juice... but do-able. Just not in a roadable package.

Well, so far at least.

A couple of years ago, a business associate of mine bought four Tesla cars to be used as company vehicles.

I thought he was out of his mind when he told me how much he paid for them, but his rationale was actually very interesting. He said the IRS allows the full deduction for business mileage -- about $0.58 per mile at the time -- even though the energy cost is almost inconsequential. He figured it was costing him about $0.30 per mile to own the cars for his business, and the IRS was allowing him to deduct almost twice that amount.

Okay thanks. That puts my mind to rest. What about charging the batteries? Is that free? Also it seems like the loss of revenue from gas taxes will have to be made up somehow too.
