Roma people are fleeing Romania for US-Mexico border to escape persecution

Cristiana Grigore isn’t surprised by the news that scores of Roma are traveling thousands of miles from Romania in Eastern Europe to the US-Mexico border, hoping to gain asylum in the United States.

US Customs and Border Protection said it has detained 2,217 Romanians so far this year, much higher than the numbers apprehended in 2020 — which it estimates at around 226 people — many of Roma ethnicity.

Grigore, who runs the Roma People’s Project at Columbia University in New York, said the pandemic has increased levels of poverty among Roma communities. Grigore is Roma and comes from the small city of Slatina in southern Romania.

A bunch of them accosted me at the Eiffel tower in Paris. They are shakedown artists. I was never so happy to see the gendarmes show up.

Yes, they are. “Roma” is the term they use for themselves. Originally a tribe that migrated from probably India about the time of Alexander the Great, they have remained pretty much a closed society, surviving by their wits and by sometimes illegal means, earning themselves a reputation that has lasted and even been reinforced down through the centuries.

Darned right they are persecuted almost everywhere. For good reason. But it is still persecution. And therefore a very good excuse to ask for “asylum”.

Aren’t there countries closer to Romania that would provide these “Roma” people better lives? Oh well. America will accept the hoards from across the world. Perhaps those “closer” countries don’t see good things happening by accepting these foreigners.
