KEY FACTS

The Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that would allow student-athletes to get some additional education-related benefits like reimbursements for academic expenses and internships, though that ruling still kept in place other limits like being directly compensated for playing on sports teams.

Student-athletes had sued the NCAA alleging it was violating federal antitrust laws with its rules that limit student compensation.

The NCAA had asked the court to strike down the court’s ruling and let them keep all the restraints on athletes’ benefits in place, claiming the court should apply an “extremely deferential standard” to the organization since it’s an “a joint venture among members who must collaborate” on athlete compensation instead of a monopoly subject to antitrust rules.

This was a cowardly ruling.

Actually, I’m too pissed off right now to type. So I better just shut the hell up.

This is a disgrace.

College D-1 football just became a semi-pro league.

NCAA is corrupt. Division I athletes on basketball and football should be compensated.

No comp at the college level, NONE. If the professional league wants to recruit out and hire then that’s when they get paid.

College sports should be for fun and exercise not a business.

Former UCLA star Ed O’Bannon played a major role in these developments. He noticed that a video game featuring an image of him in his Bruins jersey was available commercially in one of the popular titles. The NCAA and the school divvied up the proceeds and Ed didn’t even warrant a thank you.

Yes, Ed got a scholarship to attend UCLA. But the popularity of Bruins basketball earned the school many millions during his time there and helped subsidized other less-popular sports programs. Ed washed out of the NBA and the last I heard was working at a car dealership.

I know it’s a privilege to play in college and only the elites qualify. But it’s at least disconcerting to see the schools, the NCAA, and the coaches make out like bandits while the players are shut out. I also know that this will likely create a slippery slope when now even women’s soccer players will demand to get a cut when their programs are money losers.

Good luck NCAA but you’ve had it too good for too long.

There are almost 1,100 NCAA institutions with less than 40 running profitable athletic departments. The unprofitable ones are heavily subsidized by student fees included in tuition.

Paying athletes will mean that a lot of schools will end their inter-collegiate sports programs as they will not be able to afford them. This will mean less opportunity for all athletes.

Agree with this ruling.

“Amateur” athletics are cash cows for major universities. The athletes generate revenue for the school, often without getting an education.

I am not sure how this is going to work out, but hopefully it will end the farcical idea of the student athlete. A majority of football and basketball players at the top tier schools are either too stupid, or too ill-prepared for college. Maybe this ruling will help to end the pretense that these are real college students.

Also, when the schools start spending big money on the talent it will likely create more jealousy and discord within the team. What third string quarterback doesn’t think he deserves to be the starter? What happens when the starter is getting big money and the third stringer is receiving relatively peanuts in comparison? What happens when a star player is offered more money to transfer to another college?

The best outcome of this decision may be that it brings about the end of the NCAA and a majority of the school sponsored athletic programs. I have long advocated that athletics be separated from middle schools, high schools and colleges in favor of club sports. Club sports do exist for elementary kids, and they used to exist for adult sports. Colleges could still sponsor clubs, but the players could go to trade school, or work as an apprentice, or go to college. The phony pretense of the student athlete could thus end.

A complicated topic. I happened to play football at a Div I-A (now known as FBS) school. My son played college baseball on a partial scholarship and both my daughters played sports as well, but on limited scholarships as well. So, I think I have a reasonably good understanding of what scholarship athletics means to the conferences, the schools and most importantly, the student-athletes.

I think the argument against is not without its merits. The value of a full-ride scholarship to my alma mater is in excess of $60K a year. That’s some serious coin.

OTOH, the argument that says the players that are having their likeness used to promote the NCAA and the individual schools without ANY remuneration whatsoever is also not without merit. How would you like to see your face on the NCAA football video game that is going to generate hundreds of millions (or more) and you’re not going to see a penny of it. That’s not right either.

But honestly, I don’t see how they can allow some athletes to access the endorsement market without it quickly devolving into a farce. This may be one of those problems where there aren’t any good solutions.
