CONTROVERSY has been sparked ahead of the Tokyo Games after Laurel Hubbard became the first ever transgender athlete picked to compete at an Olympics.
Officials have selected the New Zealander for the women's weightlifting team following recent modifications to qualifying requirements.
The 43-year-old, who many thought her career was over in 2018 after she sustained a horrific injury to her elbow, previously competed in men's events before coming out as transgender back in 2013.
A host of critics claim Hubbard has an unfair advantage although others are arguing that there should be more inclusion at the Games.
In a statement issued by the New Zealand Olympic Committee today, Hubbard said: “I am grateful and humbled by the kindness and support that has been given to me by so many New Zealanders.”
Hubbard will now compete in the women's 87-kg weightlifting category.
She became eligible when the International Olympic Committee in 2015 changed its rules.
The IOC are now allowing transgender athletes to compete as a woman if their testosterone, a hormone that increases muscle mass, levels are below a certain threshold.
Hubbard’s testosterone levels are below that threshold, but that has not stopped critics claiming her participation in the Olympics is still unfair to female-born athletes.
They pointed to the biological advantages, such as increased bone and muscle density, of those who went through puberty as males.
LAUREL HUBBARD
The New Zealand released this statement after her inclusion for the Tokyo Olympic Games: “I am grateful and humbled by the kindness and support that has been given to me by so many New Zealanders.“When I broke my arm at the CW Games, I was advised my career had likely reached its end. But your support, encouragement and aroha carried me through the darkness.“The last eighteen months has shown us all that there is strength in kinship, in community, and in working together towards a common purpose.“The mana of the silver fern comes from all of you and I will wear it with pride.”
Well, at least we know it won’t be passed on to another generation...................
So from now on all the women’s Olympic records will fall to men.
Libtards at their finest. 🤪
They used to ban entire countries like east Germany for this kind of crap and now they can’t wait to screw everything up where it’s unwatchable and the results are meaningless.
Good job you convinced me not to watch a second of the corrupt olympics clown show. 🖕🏻
Title IX falls into a pile of garbage.....................
I haven’t watched any of the last two Olympic Games because of the “wokeness” of the athletes.
I do not feel sorry for women at all, F ‘em.
They were the ones who voted this crap in and pushed for it over the last 20 years. Let them wallow in their misery. Womens voting habits are their worst enemy.
Most people watch the mens sports anyway
Long ago I was a high school gymnast, so I’ve always followed gymnastics. ...now maybe not...the left RUINS EVERYTHING
Pathetic.
Oksana Baiul is Ukrainian, not Russian.
IMHO, Baiul earned that Gold Medal. Nancy Kerrigan was always overrated and a spoiled brat.
Just have a transgender Olympics. Makes everything simpler. Hold it during the regular Olympics. Definitely adds entertainment value.
I’m jealous that you were a gymnast. I could never walk two steps on a balance beam before falling off, lol.
Like you, I enjoyed watching gymnastics. You are spot on about leftists ruining everything.
Everything leftists touch, they destroy. They are a cancer,
Farce
Agreed. There is absolutely NOTHING (in that photo) that says "female". That is a man, a man with mental health issues; but, a man.
I will not be watching any Olympic coverage. They have made the whole of the Olympics a joke.
I can't wait for the men to show up for women's figure skating. They will win, too; because I don't think a woman has yet to land a clean Quadruple jump. Men do land those. the first fake "female" to land a Quad jump, will definitely get the medal.
