Ohio is reportedly down to one last Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips restaurant with the Garfield Heights location closing its doors last Saturday.
Owner Ben Vittoria said the decision to shutter the seafood house was not an easy one, but that, like many other restaurants in the area, he recently had trouble finding enough employees.
The location has been open since 1978, with Vittoria taking over the franchise in 2001. And he still owns the last Ohio location in Cuyahoga Falls, telling FOX 8 he plans to dedicate all of his resources to keeping that one running. Vittoria said Arthur Treacher’s stands apart from other fast food restaurants in that all their food is made in-house, rather than from frozen.
There are reportedly less than 10 Arthur Treacher’s restaurants left across the country, drastically down from when there were once hundreds. The restaurant got its start in Columbus back in 1969.

No more Arthur Treachers? What will Shirley Temple say? What will Merv Griffin say? Not much, unfortunately, as they no longer enjoy Treacher’s fish and chips. Well, maybe in heaven...
I vaguely remember hearing about Arthur Treacher’s but that was decades ago. I don’t know if they were active here in Michigan or not......
My last post made reference about hearing about them here in Michigan but I don’t remember when or even where their restaurants were....
I loved Mr. Burger when we lived in Grand Rapids in the 80’s. They still around?
There was one on Seven Mile near the John Lodge Freeway while I was growing up. Another one in Clawson on 14 Mile that still has the original building and sign but repurposed for something else.
Oh, and lots and lots of repurposed Red Barn restaurant buildings around, some still with the original roofs.
we have one in ohio/pa its great.
LJS had one place here but dint last long, ate there a few times and liked it
Not just hoagies, but especially hoagies. Speedway, Sheetz, Wa-Wa and even the occasional Subway, though I honestly don't know how they make it here with all that competition.
We do have more than our share of fat people, for sure!
Only place I’ve lived that had one was DC area circa 1990.
Similar in quality to LJS & Capt. D.
Which to me is poor quality.
Those weren’t in my part of the country. Similar to A&W it appears. A 60’s shot there. And Mom got us Jiffy Pop!
We used to eat at one in the Akron area when I was a kid.

I have no idea, I never heard of them. They must have been a small chain....
1 fish, 3 shrimps, clams, chips, and 2 hush puppies
I don’t know if it was an urban British thing but the Arthur Treachers near where I grew up did a lot of walk-up business. They really didn’t have a large inside area and had maybe a table or two outside. The two locations I recall didn’t (and couldn’t) have drive-thru service because of how the buildings were situated.
sign me up.
They used to be in Manchester, CT on Center Street across the street from a First National Supermarket (now a courthouse).
There was an Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips in Ala Moana shopping center in Honolulu in the late ‘60s.
I don’t remember any other fish and chips places in Hawaii at the time, but I have always compared any fish and chips since then to Arthur Treacher’s and they just aren’t as good.
I was there in the 80s, no AT
I liked red barn
