The Steamship Authority's website is up and running again and customers can book reservations for vehicle travel and fast-ferry travel online, the agency announced Saturday.

The Authority was the target of a ransomware attack on the morning of June 2. The attack caused delays and affected operations. The extent and origin of the attack is still under investigation.

The FBI is leading the investigation, and is working in conjunction with the Coast Guard and the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Security Unit, according to an email received from Coast Guard First District Petty Officer Amanda Wyrick.

The safety of vessels was never threatened since the cyberattack did not affect radar or GPS functions, according to Steamship Authority spokesman Sean Driscoll.

The Steamship Authority is continuing to work with local, state, and federal officials to address the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity and forensic investigators the company is working to determine the full nature and scope of the event.

This seems like an odd hit. Yes Obama et al live/vacation there, but that lot is "above" this pedestrian mode of getting on and off the islands.

The “odd” hits likely have less security. The bad guys are the Internet equivalent of car thieves trying all the doors in the parking lot.

Maybe people should go back and rewatch the opening episode of the reboot of Battlestar Galactica.

Nantucket...
Fond memories of family summer trips to there before the war...

During the war, those trips weren’t possible because of all the German U-boats hanging out off of Boston harbor picking off cargo ships...

After the war, we never went back... My dad had vowed to never set foot on another ship as long as he lived...
From 1942 to 1945, as a Marine, his life was filled with ships & beaches...
