I Adopted a Pandemic Dog—Then I Had to Put Her Down. I Learned I’m Far From Alone.

Last Christmas morning, I patted my bed, inviting my newly adopted beagle, Bonnie, to jump up and cuddle. My boyfriend, still under the covers, reached out to pet her soft little head, which was now wedged between us. I turned away to grab my phone, and it happened: a guttural bark, followed by a human scream. I whipped around to see my boyfriend’s hand covered in blood. Before I could figure out how to help him, he was out the door on his way to urgent care.

It was Bonnie’s second bite in the week since I’d adopted her.

Like many others last year, I was thrilled to adopt a dog. The so-called pandemic puppy boom made for what felt like stiff competition at the time—according to one Nielsen survey, pet adoptions between March and July 2020 rose more than 15 percent from the same stretch in 2019. After months of filling out applications, I was eventually contacted by an animal shelter in New Jersey: A 6-year-old beagle whose photo melted my heart was ready to meet me. Some friends and I drove down from New York City to pick her up, and when we got out of the car, Bonnie trotted up to me immediately. Timid but curious, she allowed me to scratch one of her velvety ears as she sniffed my jacket. When she leaned into my hands like the beagle I had growing up used to do, it seemed meant to be.

First question is how in the heck did an adoption agency allow a beagle to be adopted into an apartment in New York City?

Some people should stick to cats and avoid dogs as they require training in most cases. I am a dog lover. BUT I have fostered quite a few kittens. I look at each one as a little one that is going to bring incredible joy to each person who adopts these cuties.

Once I raised a few kittens to adoption age, I became a cat lover too! I now have both a dog and a couple of foster kittens who I kept. They all get along great.

It is kitten season now and the little ones have graduated to having the run of the house. ALL rugs are gone with hardwood floors down which makes cleaning pretty quick.

I feel sad for these animals.

———————————————

10 years ago we adopted a puppy from a shelter. Maxx turned out to be the most disagreeable unsociable dog I’ve ever seen. He was only 10 weeks old when we got him, so we do not know why.

He cannot be trusted with other people. He barely tolerates me. But we have taken care of him all these years despite his problems.

This is horrible. This libtard should have been put down, not the poor dog.

Demonrats shouldn’t be allowed to have pets.

“Behavioral euthanasia”, that could be a good euphemism in criminal cases where capital punishment is justified.

This was a BEAGLE, not a Rottweiler or German Shepherd, For heaven’s sake.

I’ve had dogs for the last 45 years, including several rescues off the streets covered in Fleas and tics and abused. This is a clear case of a person who doesn’t know the first thing about keeping animals, just like getting a Freaking bunny for Easter.
She wrote this to feel better about herself and expunge her freaking leftist guilt. Poor dog. I have no sympathy at all for her.

Appalling.

I hope she never owns a dog again. She’s a neurotic nut.

Our rescue is seeing a boatload of relinquishments due to bad behavior etc. We are fostering an 8 month border collie relinquished by 2 millennial jagoffs. No training an as a result serious resource guarding issues and territoriality. Makes for stressful times with our 2 other border collies. You can see them thinking “ what is your problem?” Already had a few issues- Goose and Maverick will not start anything and get along with other dogs- but they will not be dominated and will respond if attacked.

I'm going with a different take: The dog was defending her honor and did not want a tramp for an owner. Good dog!

Keep us posted about her columns. Her next step will be having babies. That will be interesting.

The fact the boyfriend was out the door before she got her bearings was telling.

Some call these boob lamps but there are others more explicit and less stylized.

“Even if I did somehow find someone to take Bonnie, I wondered whether it would just exacerbate her already crippling anxieties.” This wonderful person never gave it a second thought that her vicious dog would bite whoever was gullible enough to trust her and take her damn dog. (Not in MY BACK YARD)..

This is true of most pet animals...

NOT ALL... but most..

You want to have a guilty pleasure, go find and watch the series “My Cat From Hell”....

I can’t help but crack up... You have people on TV literally saying if their existing cat and fiancee or BF or GF can’t get along they will have to dump the human.. not the cat... and then you have the BF/GF Fiancee crying about it... (not every episode, but more than a few)...

Like seriously, if the person puts their pet ahead of you while you are dating, where do you think you are going to rate if you get married?

Seriously though, reinforces most behavior issues are human related more than animal related.
