Kim Jong Un Dubs K-Pop a 'Vicious Cancer' Capable of Corrupting North Korean Youths

Back in December, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un intensified the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) culture war against South Korean media by introducing heftier labor camp sentences for individuals caught indulging in such entertainment. While the maximum punishment was set at five years of hard labor, it is now five to 15 years.

As K-pop fandom continues to grow in South Korea and other parts of the world, the North Korean government and the DPRK leader are reiterating the country's stance on South Korean music and media.

The 37-year-old leader of the DPRK recently referred to K-pop as a "vicious cancer," that has the potential to corrupt North Korean youths with unsavory "attire, hairstyles, speeches, behaviors," according to the New York Times, citing state media.

North Korean state media emphasized that, if left unchecked, K-pop and related forms of South Korean entertainment could make the DPRK "crumble like a damp wall."

Kim's anti-K-pop sentiments are nothing new, as the North Korean leader spoke out in April about what he perceived to be "a serious change" in the "ideological and mental state" of North Korean youths.

Furthermore, due to recent legislation, North Koreans caught indulging in South Korean media can be sentenced to five to 15 years of hard labor.

"Young North Koreans think they owe nothing to Kim Jong Un," Jung Gwang Il, a defector from North Korea, told the Times.

"He must reassert his ideological control on the young if he doesn’t want to lose the foundation for the future of his family’s dynastic rule," added Jung, who reportedly runs a smuggling ring to transport K-pop into the DPRK.

Relatedly, the South Korean government has instituted fines and jail time for those caught sending material critical of the North Korean government across the border.

These acts, typically carried out by human rights organizations and North Korean defectors, now carry up to three years in prison and a maximum fine of $27,000.

I could be wrong, but I think a lot of the actual individuals come and go. I’ve been a lot of obits for K-pop stars who “lose their shine” and have their career end at 25. They don’t take it well (suicide). Now, perhaps there are some individual K-pop stars who have been on the top of the charts for 25 years and are rich like Madonna or Garth Brooks, but I think most of them have short careers.

K(orean)-Pop

The ‘ultimate’ at the present time is a group known as BTS. Depending on who you hear it from, their name in Korean is an acronym that stands for “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”. Others have also said their name means “Better Than Sex” or “Be There Soon”.

They’re not my cup of tea, but they’re not totally unlistenable.

They would have careers like any pop star, like an athlete. Like I’ve been saying for decades, invest wisely and have a career plan. Anyone in tgat business who can’t see a short career is just blind.

The BTS boys are exemplary. They’ve been investing. They have good business managers. They are very smart.

So, was it Elvis’ hip gyrations that led us down the path where so many pretend that homosexuality is normal?

“He’s probably right to worry. It’s been said that rock and roll and bluejeans brought down the USSR, at least in a cultural sense.”

The contrast with China is an interesting one. The CCP is perfectly happy for K-Pop, Marvel movies, and blue jeans to thrive.

They have learned lessons from the USSR, and that does make them a more difficult opponent.

Honestly, ANYTHING that can bring down a Communist regime (short of global thermonuclear war or massive death of innocents) is okay in my book

I'm not LS's manager nor do I play one on TV, but I would encourage you to check out Rockin' the Wall.

It is the compelling story of rock and roll's part in bringing down the Berlin Wall and smashing the Iron Curtain. Told from the perspective of rockers who played at the time, on both sides of the Wall, and from survivors of the communist regimes who recalled the lifeline that rock music provided them...(t)he message that emerges is that music is a force of liberation, and in a society like America's, where it is seldom - if ever – truly suppressed, music failed to ignite a social revolution. Behind the Iron Curtain, where the mere act of expressing one's individuality constituted a potential act of revolution, music provided the key thread upon which the anti-communist struggle gained ground.

Smart people in South Korea should start broadcasting K-Pop (and maybe Cactus et al for good taste) on shortwave into NK.

A very good argument can be made that allowing for Elvis’s hips started the process of allowing more and more lascivious actions by entertainers.

It is the same slippery slope that got us (generically) to accepting drag queen library entertainers.

Each new group or person has to go further than the one before to get eyes and dollars.

China has already committed suicide. We are just waiting to see how many others they will take with them.

By limiting the birth of children in such a draconian method, they have set the stage. The children now want all of the stuff and good times they see in the movies, and kids get in the way of the fun times.

Once they decide they want children, most of the women are either to old to safely have children or can’t because of all the abortions or over the counter post-pregnancy abortion drugs.

There is only one solution, Christianity, but they will not dare let that one in, their master won’t like it.

K Pop is short for “Korean Popular'' culture.

It's dozens of girl and boy bands all signing and dancing with whiz bang lighting and stage effects, sugary , sappy love songs modeled on American pop music. It's like rap ''music'' without the profanity and butt waving. It's big business in SK.

You sure about that:

Birth rate per woman 2019:
*China - 1.696
*USA - 1.705

Whatever troubles China is in, the US is the same here.
