One Richmond family got a shocking delivery last month when 80,000 pennies were dumped on their front lawn. Now, they're using the money to help those in need.
"I just turned 18. When I was in the middle of class, my dad came by. He had rented a trailer," Avery Sanford, a Deep Run High School senior, said. "He pulled up in front of the house and turned the trailer on so it dumped out all the pennies on the grass and my mom came out and was like, 'What are you dumping in my yard?' She didn't know who it was until he shouted, 'It's your final child support payment."
The act had an impact on the teenager.
"It's not just my mom he's trying to embarrass, it's also me and my sister and it's upsetting that he didn't consider that before he did that," Sanford said.
Once the pennies were picked up, Sanford and her mom decided to turn a bad situation into a positive one.
Every penny of Avery's last child support payment will be donated to Safe Harbor, a domestic abuse center.
"Turning around and donating that money to moms and children in need, I feel like that really turns this situation into a positive. You can learn from it," Avery said.

He should have been glad it was his last payment and moved on. Was no need to humiliate the kids even if his ex was a bitch.
He made himself look bad and I hope that someday he regrets that scene.
I have zero idea the background other than the girl said in the video her dad had not tried to see her in years. She just turned 18 and wanted to turn an embarrassing situation into something positive.
I try not to generalize people or situations and take each person and event that I learn about as it’s own.

And then there are people like me. Who raised my incredible son without the deadbeat father and never asked for a dime. Nor ever received one. As you said. There are all types of back stories. Generalizing based on your experience should not be a blanket opinion. I try not to judge deadbeats the same. I’m sure they have their reasons.

I need the other side of the story.
If men are being forced to pay child support, women should have to keep an itemized statement proving the money is going to the kids.
he taught his kids to count their pennies and to be charitable...
they did it and ran to the news to shame him, and they called the cops..
and now he doesn’t have to deal with them any longer...
There should be a periodic accounting of the use of the funds as part of the settlement, to assure that they are spent on the children.
I tried to NOT get child support from my ex. The court said I could not do that because it was not mine to refuse, it belonged to my child.
Just 2 pennies..

Disagree. At least until recently, it was generally the woman who chose the man/men she was going to associate with. Then we got to listen to her complaints about her choices. Bad boys and all that.....

No adult would do what this baby did. You made the child. You are responsible. Pay the bill. Love your children. Be part of their lives.
I don’t care about the woke aspect of this. What I think is abhorrent is a man embarrassing himself like this. That is not a man. That is the action of a petulant child.
Sure, by default.
But there are special circumstances, like abuse (same goes for the mom).
But assuming both parents are relatively sane, they should have joint custody.
But if the mom is doing him wrong, he can't take it put on his kids, either - leave them out of it.
Anecdotally, over the years I have seen many more dead-beat dads than lousy moms. A LOT more.
