The real data:

The investigators found high caffeine intake was not associated with increased risk for higher IOP or glaucoma overall; however, among participants with the strongest genetic predisposition to elevated IOP — in the top 25 percentile — greater caffeine consumption was assoc

More specifically, those who consumed the highest amount of daily caffeine- more than 480 milligrams which is roughly four cups of coffee — had a 0.35 mmHg higher IOP. Additionally, those in the highest genetic risk score category who consumed more than 321 milligrams of daily caffeine — roughly three cups of coffee — had a 3.9-fold higher glaucoma prevalence when compared to those who drink no or minimal caffeine and in lowest genetic risk score group.

My maternal grandfather had a filled coffee cup in his hand before an early breakfast and several more during the day.

He never had glaucoma. He died in his mid 70’s.

My Dad was about as bad re coffee. He had incredible vision until his mid 50’s. Rx Glasses worked until his mid 60’s.

Then, he developed glaucoma. The treatment then was surgery and being strapped in bed post op for a long time. He said no way.

He gave up driving, and we got him the Reader’s Digest in big print and other books with large print. My mother bought a big tv and moved his chair very close. She was a great reader/teacher. So, she would re read his favorite books to him.

A helpful neighbor would help him take walks several times a week and tell him what they were seeing.

One of their in laws was an Optometrist and did a good job enabling him to have some vision.

Fortunately, my siblings and I have only had cataracts, and we inherited the non glaucoma DNA/genes.

The males on my wife’s side of the family from her dad, bros and our sons have incredible vision. Her sibling bros are in their 70’s and still have 20/10 vision. Our sons are the same way and our grandson has great vision.

Causes global warming, too.

But mainly in children and women of color.

All the ‘fun’ eye issues run in my family including Glaucoma. I switched to decaf a number of years ago, just to play it safe.

Now, to wait for the Mac Degen, and the Cataracts to strike. (So far, so good at my last eye exam!)

“Consuming large amounts of daily caffeine may increase the risk of glaucoma more than three-fold for those with a genetic predisposition to higher eye pressure according to an international, multi-center study.”

Of course, NEXT week, caffeine will be GOOD for your eyesight, LOL!

How about the French? Are we friends with them again, or do we still hate those cheese-eating surrender monkeys? I can’t keep up. ;)

Gadzoox! How distressing!

The investigators found high caffeine intake was not associated with increased risk for higher IOP or glaucoma overall; however, among participants with the strongest genetic predisposition to elevated IOP — in the top 25 percentile — greater caffeine consumption was associated with higher IOP and higher glaucoma prevalence.

Oh. I see. So they found out that if you are already high risk for glaucoma you might get glaucoma. Got it.
