...I have been celebrating since February, when I got my first shot of the Moderna vaccine at a San Fernando Valley park. My sister Anita in Cleveland has spent the months since then worrying about me... Ever since COVID-19 vaccines became a reality, she’s been poring over articles and social media posts about hypothetical harms that most scientists debunk. That left her determined to shun the vaccine — and afraid for me to get my next shot.
...
...my fear of needing a ventilator to breathe was stronger than whatever apprehension I felt about the vaccines.
For my sister, that ratio was reversed. She worried that the new COVID vaccines might turn out, in the long run, to be as dangerous as the disease.
Our email exchange launched a back-and-forth that lasted for months. It was fractious and frustrating at times, because we are tethered to separate echo chambers that amplify our individual views.
...
“This is a new disease and these are new vaccines, with emergency use authorizations,” she said. “We have a lot of information on how safe and effective it is. But what hasn’t been studied is what it can do five or 10 years from now.
“So it’s totally reasonable for some people to say, ‘This is brand new and it’s hard for me to really feel comfortable with it.’”
...
So we’ve finally reached a truce: she won’t send me scary videos demonizing the vaccines, and I won’t try to debunk what I consider crazy stuff.

The one question I can’t find an answer to is this.
The spike protein is toxic on its own, as researchers at Salk and UC San Diego have found. It is responsible for the vascular aspect of covid. The spike protein is in the vaccines, or they cause the body to produce them. How is that not harmful? I have read that the spikes stay in the deltoid muscle, and I’ve also read that that isn’t true.
The research that the spike protein is harmful was only released this past April as far as I can tell, and the vaccines were created before that. So what if anything was done to stop the spike protein from wreaking havoc on the circulatory system?
Be a wimp. Always do what the government tells you.
Stupid.
I have no problem at all with folks who don’t want to be vaccinated!....Period.
I just wish they would grant vaccinated folks the same courtesy.
Since post #1 has been removed, I can’t reply to it so ... you’re it.
This family’s not divided. I’m 55, wife’s 45 and kids are 18/19. We’re healthy, active and we haven’t had a flu or cold(coronavirus) in 5-6 years so we’ll pass on the newfangled jab. All the wrong people are trying to convince us we NEED it. The COVID death rate in this county is 0.001458333 after 1 1/2 years.
We’ll take our 99.9996% chances. Probably better chances than that since the ones that died were probably all 80+ with 2-3 comorbidities.
Only people that have been wearing masks here since last summer are people who work in grocery, convenient stores, restaurants or chain stores. Kids went back to school late last summer, no masks, no distancing.
Grampa Dave wrote that little of the state governments' actions during the pandemic was about safety, but about control.
Similarly, on some level, I suspect some dimension of the CDC et al's vaccine messaging is not about statistics and merits and "science," but about the sanctioning of shaming.
While I'm happy this article's writer and sister are in a 'happy place' I fear their story is in the minority. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.
Did you ever stop to consider that the “mask wearing idiots” (as you put it) have actually spent at least a little bit of time researching how deadly this virus is, and that they want to do whatever they possibly can - regardless of their political viewpoints - to protect themselves and their families?
We can debate masks all day long. Yeah, bandanas, cloth masks, etc are bogus. As is dropping the mask below your nose, or worse, your chin and then saying “but, but, but, MASKS don’t work!”. But there are countless - and I mean COUNTLESS examples of entire countries (Taiwan [11 deaths/Million] , S. Korea [38 deaths/M], New Zealand [5 deaths/M], vs the US at 1,840 deaths/Million) that beat the virus down to almost zero cases...by using “good” (eg: surgical or better) masks AND wearing them PROPERLY. Oddly, Asian countries did the best on this..probably because they’ve used masks for previous outbreaks like SARS. But here in America..nope! Masks became politicized. Some (ahem) had to “prove their manhood” or how ‘free’ they were by bashing masks. And we had the most cases worldwide and are #18 out of 222 countries worldwide in deaths as a result. Kinda stupid if you ask me.
Now, we have variants. Yeah, I know the FR crowd doesn’t believe that. But we do. And they’re not prevented nearly as much by the vaccines. So, people continue (wisely, IMHO), to wear masks to protect themselves. Hopefully, DECENT (surgical or ideally KN95/N95) ones which are now widely available at a pretty reasonable cost.
Quit being so judgemental. Some of us are actually taking this thing seriously and trying to do what we can to keep ourselves and our families healthy. And when we do get it behind us, we can then all get back to “normal” - hopefully more quickly than if we keep letting this damned thing continue to spread and mutate.
Oh, and for a final comment..I know a guy that bashed masks..thought the virus was a big joke, a “hoax”, etc. Kept going to bars and restaurants and basically living life just like he did pre-pandemic. 51 years old.
Yeah, he’s dead today. FROM COVID. Died about a month back. No, he didn’t die of a “co-morbidity”. I read his final FB post. It was titled “WHO KILLED ME?”. Blood Ox down to ~80% on the night before he died. Gasping for air as his lungs filled with goo the consistency of concrete. True story, whether you believe it or not.
I didn’t realize the 300 word limit applied to the first (OPs) comment.
🤔
Did you happen to save it and then you can repost?
Thanks.
Here....I still had a window open, with your recap....

This was the most telling part of the story:
Still, I’ve come to understand the mash-up of forces driving my sister’s choice: her affinity for natural remedies, her experience in Cleveland, her distrust of government and the medical establishment and, perhaps most important, the support and influence of her cadre of like-minded friends.
The syntax choice - “influence of her cadre of like-minded friends” - clearly reveals Ms. Banks’ mindset that her sister’s friends are kooks.
But then Ms. Banks basically says that her friends - which it turns out are as equally-influential - are the smaaaht ones:
In my world, everyone I know was excited by the prospect of a COVID-19 vaccine long before one existed. We considered it the ticket out of isolation and back to normal life.
I remember the flurry of messages that filled my inbox when vaccine sign-ups began, with tips from colleagues and friends on how to navigate the clumsy appointment system and which vaccination venues had the least odious wait times.
On my NextDoor feed, the usual litany of neighborhood complaints suddenly gave way to smiley-face emojis and “VACCINATED!!!” posts. And my friends proudly sported “I’m Vaccinated” stickers, making it feel as much like a civic duty as voting.
But my sister’s experience has been markedly different. Her social media feeds are crowded with conspiracy theories, reminders of the mercenary leanings of Big Pharma, and testimonials from people who say they were harmed by the vaccine.
People could maybe.... mind their own business?
Pretty sure this is the only time in history when a vaccine was given Emergency Use Authorization for a disease that isn‘t always deadly and in this case hardly ever deadly. I simply don’t understand throwing out testing protocols for a disease with a 98.5% survival rate. It’s just not done.
An engineer and anti-vaxxer arrive at a bridge. The anti-vaxxer asks, “Is it safe to cross the bridge?”
Engineer: It is 99,97% safe to cross that bridge.
Anti-vaxxer: I’d rather swim.
So many tough patriots caved instantly and now lick the hands of their betters who tell them what to do. I use the word patriots loosely because we know that’s not what they are, but I’m amazed at how many lap up info and vaccines and want to push others to.
Yes. My brother’s wife is extremely woke.
An anti-vaxxer said to her child, “Life is way too short to be taken seriously.”
An anti-vaxxer, an entitled woman and a Karen walk into a bar. She demands to speak to the manager.
Who the hell celebrates getting an experimental vaccine? These people are part of a cult.
An anti-vaxxer, an anti-masker and a conspiracy theorist walk into a bar. The bartender looks up, groans to himself, pours himself a drink and asks “What’ll it be Karen?”
So, in Grande Prarie, Alberta, our outbreaks came from Walmart and the RCMP detachment, both of whom were wearing masks non stop.
I don’t know what you think you’re preaching, but when the government imposed masks on the public, the infection rates skyrocketed.
Perhaps there’s something else going on in those asian countries, maybe it’s more Vit D, but I can tell you that your post doesn’t even come close to passing the smell test based on what I’ve even seen just here locally let alone anywhere else.
Was that guy you know treated with HCQ or Ivermectin early on? How about loads of vit C? Was he given any of that? How was he treated?
Do as you will, and don’t tell me or anyone else how to do as we will.
I thought facebook/twitter were deleting all the “conspiracy theories”. They can’t have it both ways. lol
99.98% survival rate, do I want to spin the wheel and inject myself with something to do possible harm of which many doctors have warned us about?
You won’t care it seems based on your next posts, your mind is made up and that’s fine, have a great 2 years.
