The study, in mice and people, showed that a diet high in sugar and fat causes damage to Paneth cells, immune cells in the gut that help keep inflammation in check. When Paneth cells aren't functioning properly, the gut immune system is excessively prone to inflammation, putting people at risk of inflammatory bowel disease and undermining effective control of disease-causing microbes.
In people, obesity is frequently the result of eating a diet rich in fat and sugar. So the scientists fed normal mice a diet in which 40% of the calories came from fat or sugar, similar to the typical Western diet. After two months on this chow, the mice had become obese and their Paneth cells looked decidedly abnormal.
"Obesity wasn't the problem per se," Liu said. "Eating too much of a healthy diet didn't affect the Paneth cells. It was the high-fat, high-sugar diet that was the problem."
The Paneth cells returned to normal when the mice were put back on a healthy mouse diet for four weeks. Whether people who habitually eat a Western diet can improve their gut immunity by changing their diet remains to be seen, Liu said.
"This was a short-term experiment, just eight weeks," Liu said. "In people, obesity doesn't occur overnight or even in eight weeks. We'd need to do more research before we can say whether this process is reversible in people."
Further experiments showed that a molecule known as deoxycholic acid, a secondary bile acid formed as a byproduct of the metabolism of gut bacteria, forms the link between a Western diet and Paneth cell dysfunction. The bile acid increases the activity of two immune molecules—farnesoid X receptor and type 1 interferon—that inhibit Paneth cell function.

Sugar and fat? Surely one of those is the real culprit. Why would researchers fail to isolate these variables?
There are no known “essential carbs.”
**There are no known “essential carbs.”**
And that’s why these researchers stopped short of isolating the harmful variable between “sugar and fat”. What ever happened to real science?
I’m guessing you have gut issues...
Actually, I don’t, but I know others who do and, for some strange reason, there has been a bunch of new research come out on it.
You’re my kind of guy.
Carbs, fat, and protein can be made into blood sugar/glucose.
Carbs, fats, and proteins can be made into fat.
Only proteins or their component amino acids can be made into tissues we use. Otherwise, our bodies break down existing tissue into amino acids for building up more needed tissues or for use as blood sugar/glucose.
Heh. The next iteration of Twinkies will have a mascarpone creme and I’m literally gathering what I need for all batch brewing considering the proposed 2000% tax increase by our state’s tyrant.
Full disclosure: The current word count is >250k and references >1000 for the (still unpublished) 4 volumes I’ve researched/written on health. One book is entirely on weather, another entirely about the gut. “Doctors” haven’t got a clue...
The mascarpone sounds dreamy. Now what about them brewskis recipes?
hi fructose core syrup, not sugar has been the bain of any diet for over 40 yrs now. cut out the processed foods. cook more at home
Gathering those as well. I work with a guy on whom I’m leaning to get started. He’s been home brewing for >10 years, has recipes and knows others from whom I can get some used hardware
I need.
This is supposed to be some new revelation? Duh.
Actually, it is fat that easily adds fat, while in one can eat a diet somewhat high in both - along with greens and protein - if such a one works it off so that they do not become overweight, and even can stay under weight. Not that such a diet is to be preferred but it is the sedentary overeating lifestyle that is really deadly, resulting in diet craze. Pray to God in Christ to not gain life, and for Him to bring you daily to people you can help, to make a positive change in their lives for time and eternity, and get out regularly to serve.

Type of fat makes a difference. My husband has been on a keto/carnivore diet for 3 years and the only fat he eats is animal/natural but a lot of it. He lost 65 lbs, and his glucose, bp, cholesterol and all other blood work numbers are now perfect. Before he could never get his cholesterol numbers down even with meds. His heart is great, arteries are clean, allergies are minimal, energy through the roof, and he quit snoring at night.
In the beginning his doctor was skeptical, and concerned, and had him come in every 3 months for blood work. The diet initially raised his cholesterol, but after a year, it dropped substantially. 3 years later this same doctor says to keep doing what he’s doing.
My son went on it as well, but he has to take some time off of it because he looses too much weight. His blood work numbers also are great, and his migraines and epilepsy are better controlled. He is on 3 weeks, off 1.
I tried it but cannot because of a health condition, but I do limit my starches to 1 potato or 1 cup rice/day. I have seen benefits from that.
The American food pyramid is upside down if you ask me.
Quit snoring at night? That alone would sell books! But he likely is eating less calories overall due to feeling full bcz of the fat he consumes, while I believe a in the long run a balanced diet is best.
He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. (Psalms 104:14-15)
