Walmart will give 740,000 employees free Samsung smartphones by the end of the year so they can use a new app to manage schedules, the company announced Thursday.
Employees will only be able to use work features on the new Me@Walmart while on the clock, the company said. "The idea of this app started as a way to manage associates' schedules and has grown into our single in-store app for U.S. associates, saving them time and helping them be more efficient," the company said.
Earlier this year, Walmart announced pay increases for nearly a third of its U.S. workforce of 1.6 million. In February, digital and store workers saw their starting hourly rates increase from $13 to $19 depending on their location and market.

Those among the 740,000 employees who don’t already know that nothing is “free” will soon learn it.
A free phone. How nice. Now Walmart can track their employees on and off the job.
Track the employees. Geo tagging them to collect data on their coming and going, habits. Yep big brother.
Samsung is based in South Korea.
Vietnam is actually where Samsung phones are made, most of them anyway. Samsung’s manufacturing facility is located in Vietnam’s Thai Nguyen province where two factories are churning out smartphones, tablets and wearable devices.
Most of Samsung’s global supply, including for markets like North America and Europe, comes from Vietnam.
The 5G phones are not selling.
So they are trying to get everyone on them.
“The 5G phones are not selling.”
We’re shopping for new phones, and specifically will NOT look at 5G devices.

More than likely this will also be used to enslave all of their employees in much, much worse ways. Such as the app will know through a combination of GPS and accelerometer readings to know when and where you are working. The chronometer itself will know if you are on the clock or off the clock. Either way means Wal-Mart owns you in ways you will never be able to abandon or misuse to your benefit(s). You will most definitely be blacklisted should you be fired or quit for your refusal to work while off the clock as well.
Games deleted?.
In other news China is giving the Uighurs free housing, free re-education classes, and free executions.
Good way to track every move your employees make.
I prefer my own phone. My son is a Major in the Army JAG Corps. He has his personal phone and one issued by the Army for business use. He carries both... I'm glad I only need one...
Nothing is free. The customers will pay for them.
If I worked for Wal-Mart, my “free” phone would never leave the building. It would live in my locker when I was not working. I would also charge it on company time.
“I know people who work for Walmart, and the way they handle schedule management is disgusting. “
absolutely ... i’ve talked to a number of walmart employees, and almost all are part time, AND are essentially on call at all times and at the drop of the hat to be “scheduled” to come to work RIGHT NOW ... essentially, walmart employees have no life outside of waiting around to see when walmart wants them to come to work ... my guess is the “free” samsung “smartphone” will be primarily a glorified work pager ...
Of course it is. I had a pager back in 1985. And I was happy to have it back then as I always wanted to get the extra hours (and income) when I was an hourly worker. I would work 100 hours a week if I could.
Now that I'm on salary, the "24/7 availability" has lost its lustre.
Poor bastards.
That is real nice of them. The phone is very good phone too plus has the insurance. I wonder if it covers cracked screens etc?
“You missed work because you were at the doctor’s office all day? That’s funny, the tracker on your phone shows you were at the beach all day.”
“Now that I’m on salary, the “24/7 availability” has lost its lustre. “
ya think?
