Video shows 17-year-old San Gabriel Valley girl shoving away bear to save her dogs
KTLA ^ | June 1, 2021

The surveillance footage shows the moment just after 2:30 p.m. when a brown bear and two cubs walked along a brick wall in the teen’s backyard in Bradbury. Three of the family’s dogs started barking at them. At the time, the family was gardening at another end of the yard when they heard the barking. Videos shows the bear swat at the dogs a few times before the teen runs up.

Video shows her shove the bear, causing the animal to fall backward and off the wall.

The teen suffered a sprained finger and scraped her knee, but she and her mother are thankful those are her only injuries. Hailey said she ran from the wild bear as quickly as she could.

The family said this isn’t the first time seeing a bear or other wild animals around their home in Bradbury since moving there in February. Morinico said bears are usually spotted in the neighborhood around two to three times a week.

But this is the first time any of them have gotten so close to the wildlife, they said. And it may be the last — both Hailey and her mother suggested no one do what she did.

40 years ago, that family would have had a new bearskin rug. Now, if they did that, the young lass would probably be in jail.

“She had the best chance when the near was precariously balanced.”

Stupid girl - her “best chance” was to stay in the house - dogs are replaceable.

“She acted fast and decisively.”

She acted impulsively. I hope she learns from this and stays inside next time.

You do so something like that to save a child - not a dog.

You obviously don’t understand the love some have for a pet.

The girl has heart.

“The girl has heart.”

I agree... a heart is not what she’s lacking.

Black bears are occasionally seen in Tujunga, which is within LA’s city limits. The last California grizzly bear killed in Southern California was shot in Tujunga Canyon in 1916.

Incidentally, black bears are not native to Southern California. They were introduced in 1933 during the governorship of James “Sunny Jim” Rolph.

“The species “brown bear” doesn’t exist in California. If it had been a brown bear, she probably wouldn’t be alive.”

Well it’s still on our state flag at least...

What may be the last California Grizzly was killed near Trabuco Canyon back in 1908.

I’m surprised that they haven’t been reintroduced, so that along with our OC mountain lions they can thin out the herd of mountain bikers.

“Also, their habitats are being invaded by humans who don’t belong there.”

That area was developed over 100 years ago. It just happens to abut the Angeles National Forest.

Bradbury is about 10 miles east of Pasadena. Near the junction of the 605 and 210.

Why don't they re-introduce the grizzly bear to California? After all, they re-introduced the Mexican wolf into New Mexico, to the delight to that state's sheep ranchers, and the timber wolf, which the cattle ranchers just love, into the Northern Rockies.

“Why don’t they re-introduce the grizzly bear to California?”

The same lunatics who have been celebrating the return of adult Great White sharks to the shores of Orange County will undoubtedly ask themselves that same question. And decide that it needs to be done.

Brown bears were once in Cali but haven’t existed there for at least a century.
