Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host 135,000 racing fans for the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday and the sold-out crowd will represent a big step forward as North American sports continue to turn the page on the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We've hit our capacity for this year's Indianapolis 500 and look forward to hosting 135,000 fans at the world's largest sporting event since the pandemic began," race organizers said on Thursday.
"We're thrilled to welcome fans 'Back Home Again' and appreciate our loyal customers and their continued support."
The 135,000 represents approximately 40% of the venue capacity, which is being constrained to stem the spread of the virus.
Health officials credit rising vaccination rates in Indiana and nationwide for the state's ability to hold such a large gathering.
A year ago, the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" was held without a single fan in attendance for the first time in its history.
The 105th running of the race on Sunday will require spectators to wear masks when not eating or drinking, will check temperatures at the entrance and will have social distancing requirements inside the track.

Nice spin. 135k is hardly a sellout in a track that can hold 400k.
Looks to me like they’ve reduced ticket prices in order to sell them.
That can’t be good.
The
Greatest Spectacle in Racing!
Maybe I’ll watch again. Stopped watching years ago when you couldn’t produce most of the drivers names.
I stopped watching when we got into the noose fiasco.
A predominately white sport with deep Southern roots and a longtime embrace of Confederate symbols, NASCAR was forced last summer to face its own checkered racial history during the country’s social unrest: Bubba Wallace wore an “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirt on pit road and raced a car with “Black Lives Matter” painted on the hood; his peers promised to listen and learn; a NASCAR official knelt during the national anthem; and the governing body vowed to to do a better job of addressing racial injustice.
They have. Been to a few. Passed on it this year.
40% of capacity. More BS.
The wind generated by all those cars going by at 200 MPH is gonna blow the virus right up into the crowd and they’re all gonna die.
Wish I could be there.
The good little DIM mayor of Indy, Hogsett, with higher political ambitions, will allow relief from masks about 10 days after the 500 race...!!!
Holding the Democrat line, despite the fact that most of the rest of the state is now completely open...
Still seeing idiots, even in the hinterland, driving alone and wearing a mask...
These numbskulls are probably also vaccinated...!?
Stupid is as stupid does...
Not to worry Dr Wuhan, all the drivers will be wearing masks.
All this shit because evil....hated Trump.
Nope they have not. And most, if not all, of those in attendance will be those who have been renewing their tickets for the same seats for years. Like me. I’ll keep a beverage in my hand (water) the entire time to avoid the mask.
During qualifications last week the only ones wearing masks were the pit crews, media and track employees. Out of an easy 70K fans in attendance I saw only two wearing masks.
Don’t forget Governor Holcomb. He only lifted the mask ban in early May. He’s a chicken shit RINO.
Until you see it happen, you cannot imagine the speed and skill these people have.
It is a very interesting {but don't blink} race, because a run is over in seconds and since it is a straight, short track, there are very few serious accidents {which is a good thing}.
I will watch a bit of this race, just to get a feel for the crowd.
Last week end, there was a very nice sized crowd for the PGA { a major, won, as ya'll know, by Lefty}.
America is coming out of this forced lock down, but too many sheep continue to wear the sign of the devil.
135K is practically empty. It got up to close to 750K in the early 80. The attendance records have been scrubbed from the internet.
Stupid leftist drivel at the 500. It is a spectacle alright. A spectacle of woke fools sitting outside in face masks and the elites up top in the boxes eating drinking and not wearing face masks.
I am from Indy. That race used to be so much fun. It is a sorry assed bore now. I don’t even care to watch it anymore.
Copy that caver...
But, I’ll take Holcomb over Joey Hogsett any day of the week...
