A Dutch court ruled on Wednesday that Royal Dutch Shell, one of the world's largest oil companies, must significantly reduce carbon emissions over the next nine years in order to comply with global targets laid out in the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The decision by a district court in the Hague is the first ruling that compels a company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which scientists say are pushing global temperatures higher and causing a wide range of catastrophic consequences. The court ruled that Royal Dutch Shell must cut its carbon emissions 45 percent by 2030 from 2019 levels, far greater than the company’s standing pledge to cut emissions by 20 percent by 2030.
“This is a turning point in history,” Roger Cox, a lawyer for Friends of the Earth Netherlands, one of seven environmental groups that brought the lawsuit, said after the verdict was read. “This case is unique because it is the first time a judge has ordered a large polluting corporation to comply with the Paris climate agreement. This ruling may also have major consequences for other big polluters."
In a statement, a spokesperson for Shell said the company planned to appeal the decision.
"We are investing billions of dollars in low-carbon energy, including electric vehicle charging, hydrogen, renewables and biofuels. We want to grow demand for these products and scale up our new energy businesses even more quickly. We will continue to focus on these efforts and fully expect to appeal today’s disappointing court decision," the statement said.
The Paris Agreement, the 2015 treaty that has been signed by 197 countries, lays out ambitious targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions with the goal of keeping global average temperatures from rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Should've drilled for my own damn oil.
They were also ordered to restore all Glaciers that have melted in the last 200 years.
Shell should start by cutting off all petroleum product sales to that courts area.
How can Shell cut emissions? They ain’t the one burning the gasoline.
Nucking Futs
We must end this mass delusion before it ends us ...
Sell the company to China.

Global Warming PING!
When did the Paris accords become law in any country.
If we’re smart, we’ll all invest in those bikes that have pedal power and an electric motor in them for the BIG hills because it’s looking more and more that gasoline will be in short supply and a thing of the past.
Those bikes are going to be AWESOME transportation in Wisconsin from November through May!
Has anyone drawn a line between Socialist Democrats who bow at the altar of ‘Global Warming,’ and Electric Bike Manufacturers? ;)
Do these Dutch judges realize that, if upheld, this decision will cost thousands of Dutchmen and women to lose their jobs?
Or the judge will do what?
Cutoff all oil production to the Netherlands. When they start starving, tell them they will only turn on productuion only after every Judges throats in the Hauge are slit. Bleed us, we bleed you!
Too bad no one is interested in finding out what it was, if it might happen again and whether we can do anything about it.
How can you be ordered to follow a guideline no country in the world has signed?
Clearly this is their plan to use hand picked judges to mandate from the bench.
No law is ever passed and the left doesn’t have to face angry voters.
What I think has been missed in this thread is the larger implication for freedom: the Netherlands, a country proud for its rich tradition of liberty, has sunk to the point where a Court (the State) can literally take over a multi-billion dollar energy company and dictate its policies, mission and business model. Of course, courts throughout the free world have the power to uphold or strike down actions based on the rule of law as applied in particular cases, but this ruling is way beyond any of that.
This is also a portent of things to come under Green New Deal laws: if they can do this to companies, they can do it to individuals. Your entire lifestyle is subject to their whims: what you can drive, whether you can drive, whether you can have fuel for your pleasure craft, motor home or other recreational vehicles and activities, whether you can fly in an airplane, heat or cool your home as you please, barbecue, fire pit, fireplace, lawnmower, chainsaw, weedwhacker, etc. all gone.
We have been talking about these impacts for a while now, but this Dutch Court ruling is a real-world example that we are not merely speculating. This is the power the State is willing to wield and your freedom be damned.
