More than 4,700 square miles of ice formed over the Great Lakes in just one night on Tuesday.
The Arctic blast that swept the Midwest and Northeast saw a near-record amount of Lake Ontario was iced over, with just 20 per cent of open water left.
Overall 82 percent of the five water bodies sealed up.
Temperatures are expected to drop again on Thursday night, leading forecasters to predict that figure to climb significantly by Friday morning.

Look at the bright side.
When SHTF and it becomes a lot of hard work to keep warm.
The Entitlement Army is gonna head south.
Sure, but think of how much worse it would be without Global Warming. BTT
Was ALGORE SWIMMING THERE?
Just imagine how cold it would be without all the Global Warming.
Joe Bastardi just tweeted that its currently -28 degrees in Michigamme Michigan and the temperature won’t bottom out till 7 AM or so. They hit -39 last night.
-5 right now down here by the state line.
It could get so cold that all the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere could freeze out to blue snow on the ground, and the Left would still be screaming that man-made global warming was still going full blast.
Well, they’d be dead, but you get the idea.
Global Warming again.
Has there ever been a case in the past 100 years where one of the Great Lakes COMPLETELY froze solid to the extent that one could hike on foot from USA to Canada?
We don’t want them either.
Damn right, I volunteer to go to War against Canada.
We'll take all their beer first.
It should make for a cool summer. That’s fine with me. It’s cold here in Lansing Michigan but we’ve been getting a lot of sunshine. Two thirds through the winter we’ve only had one incident of snow more than 3”. That was Super Bowl Sunday when we got 10.5 inches
A little 3 year old froze to death in Tranna this AM. Apparently, he got out of his granny’s apartment at 4:30 AM and went outside in basically, just his ‘jammies. A neighbourhood search found him before noon, but it was too late. Link: https://ca.news.yahoo.com/toronto-police-search-three-old-boy-reported-missing-142042799.html?cache=clear
Cool...Toronto here....its perfect winter weather. No problem with melting ice rinks these days.
I remember when I lived in Cleveland in the real cold winters of 76/7/8 that happened for Lake Erie. It was dicey, because there were areas that didn’t freeze completely.
And IIRC there were a number of Coast Guard rescues of people who got trapped by open water.
The view out my window has me a little worried.
We got about 18 inches out of that storm in Jackson but you’re right. Aside from some super cold nights this winter hasn’t been as bad as last winter.
The Ice Houses will be full all summer ,WOOT!!!!
