Variable speed limits coming to I-95 south of Fredericksburg

The Virginia Department of Transportation is set to begin construction this spring for variable speed limits on Interstate 95 northbound between Caroline and Spotsylvania counties.

Crashes have occurred when northbound vehicles traveling at speed unexpectedly encounter stopped or slowing traffic flow due to congestion or lane closures for incidents and highway work zones, VDOT said.

New signs displaying variable speed limits between 35 mph and 65-70 mph will be paired with dynamic message boards along I-95 north between the 115 and 130 mile markers.

"Drivers will adjust their speed based on real-time information about delays and conditions on the road ahead," VDOT said in a news release. "Gradually slowing traffic as it approaches congestion will help to reduce the risk of crashes, and stop-and-go travel conditions.

Speed limits will be reduced only when necessary, VDOT said. Vehicle detectors will collect traffic speed and volume data, which will be fed into a software program to recognize when traffic is approaching unstable conditions (for example, very high volume and fast speed) and assign incrementally lower speeds.

Once traffic flow stabilizes, the posted speed limit will return to the maximum speed. Speeds can also be lowered manually by operators at VDOT’s Traffic Operations Center to create safer conditions in work zones, in weather events, and around traffic crashes.

Do they actually think this will slow people down below 100mph?

“But officer, the sign said ‘65 MPH.’”

Officer: “It clearly states ‘35 MPH,’ as you can see.”

Mebbe they’ll drop to 90 or 95.

so the legislature now won’t be setting legal speed limits, a computer will be doing it and it can change during the day?

That section of 95 has sudden back-ups with stop-and-go traffic which can stretch for miles. There is usually no apparent cause for them, like an accident, road work, or a breakdown. They just seem to perpetuate and amplify spontaneously as traffic coils and uncoils. It may be that adjusting the traffic flow approaching one of theses clogs will help. I think that’s what they are trying to do.

The facial recognition camera presents different speeds for different colored drivers.

Depends on your ‘privilege’.

I drive that several times per month going between Pennsylvania and North Carolina. .

Worst traffic every time. Generally, southbound is worse..

An excellent idea.

There is no future in 75 MPH to a traffic jam.

I’d just widen I-95 to at least 4 free lanes in each direction between Woodbridge and I-295. Of course, thanks to the privately run express lanes in the highway’s median, VDOT would have to pay a princely sum to Transurban just to do so, due to the “non-compete” clause.

The cause is usually some moron trying to merge onto the highway at 35MPH.

Why? I-95 was widened to 3 lanes in each direction in 1985 and that’s good enough by Virginia standards.

It depends on what the meaning of “Virginia Standards” is.

Apologies to Slick Willie.

The Mid Atlantic region has long needed a bypass of Interstate 95 through Baltimore and Washington. US 301 would make a good bypass if upgraded to freeway standards from the Delaware Maryland line to I 95 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. US 13 south of Dover, Delaware should be upgraded to a freeway to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. There is a plan for an Interstate 87 to run from Raleigh to Norfolk. If the two projects were linked and connected with tolled Delaware 1, that would serve as a bypass running from Wilmington, Delaware to Raleigh.

It will probably never happen.

The fine state of Virginia has been talking about widening I-81 for 20 years. Closer to home, talking about widening VA 28 for as long.

Meanwhile, they apparently don’t even have the money or manpower to trim vegetation from street signs or fill potholes or fix broken traffic signals.
