SPECIAL DISPATCH FROM WASHINGTON.
WASHINGTON, Wednesday, May 15.
Messrs. Simeon Draper, R.M. Blatchford, Samuel Sloan, John J. Aster, A.A. Low, R.H. McCurdy, A.C. Richards, and C.H. Russell, visited Washington this morning. They came on behalf of the Union Defence Committee of New-York, for the purpose of perfecting arrangements for the more prompt organization and forwarding of troops. They had an interview with the President at an early hour, and stated their wish that he would authorize the reception of the fourteen regiments now enrolled and in the Cities of New-York and Brooklyn. After consultation with Gen. CAMERON and Gen. SCOTT, the President gave his assent to the request of the Committee and directed, the necessary orders to be transmitted.
These fourteen regiments are to be received directly by the National Government, without going through the formula of red tape and jealousy prescribed by the Albany junta. The Brigade raised by Hon. DANIEL E. SICKLES is included in the number of regiments accepted by the President.
I believe the Union Committee have now provided for the reception of all the volunteers congregated in the vicinity of New-York, or which can be considered within the jurisdiction of the Committee. Much credit is due for the efficiency it has manifested.
After having accomplished the direct object their mission, the Committee visited the various New-York regiments now quartered in Washington, and carefully inquired into the necessities of the men. They will provide for the comfort of the troops on their return.
Secretary CAMERON has tendered to Mr. SIMEON DRAPER a commission as Colonel of a new Regiment of Dragoons. Mr. DRAPER holds the proposition open for future consideration. He would make a gallant and popular commander.

The Question of Slavery and the Present RebellionLet that sink in.We have insisted from the beginning of the wicked and baseless rebellion which now agitates the country, that the question of slavery had nothing to do with it, and the object of this great uprising of the loyal people was -- not to interfere with Slavery, but to sustain the Government and Constitution of the United States.

Interesting that prominent businessmen intervened to get troops under Federal instead of state control.

Interesting that prominent businessmen intervened to get troops under Federal instead of state control.
Maybe but wouldn’t that mean the state gov’t of NY by trying to keep troops under state conttol woukd also then be keeping costs at state level
Why would NY state want to bear the cosr?
New York probably couldn’t muster one regiment of fighting men anymore the way they’ve been rolled and pantsed by their filthy politicians.
