A self-driving car went rogue in Arizona, stalling, then speeding off before assistance could arrive. A YouTuber caught the nearly 20-minute episode on video from the backseat of the car....

...About 12 minutes into the ride, the car attempted to turn into a lane that had been blocked off with construction cones. Mid-turn it stopped and the rider called an online tech for help...before roadside assistance could get there the car sped off only to stop in the middle of the road, forcing the cars behind it to go into oncoming traffic in order to pass the vehicle. The situation elicited several beeps, as well as a visit from a nearby construction worker, but the vehicle was unable to be moved until roadside assistance arrived.

The car attempted to drive away two more times...The video also showed the car performing several unprotected turns....

The notion that AI will soon become so sophisticated that it can actually think and reason like humans is a lie born out of denial of the true source of human consciousness. Contrary to the beliefs of materialistic science, human consciousness is not simply a product of the brain. The belief is that the brain is just a very sophisticated computer, and the sum total of the human mind exists only in the brain, therefore once we can build sufficiently powerful computers AI will equal and then surpass human capabilities.

Hogwash. First, the “mind” and consciousness are products of the combination of the physical brain and the soul. I would say that the soul is the source of consciousness and thought, and the brain is the interface between the soul and the physical world. Refusal to consider the spiritual element of “mind” is why no matter how sophisticated computers get, they will never approach the reasoning capability of humans, will certainly never come anywhere near achieving “consciousness”, and will always be subject to making unexpectedly dumb mistakes.

Computers will continue to get much better at performing rote tasks, and will improve in appearing to mimic human behavior, but underneath it all they will never be anything more than dumb machines, carrying out programs that humans have inserted into them. Think far more Siri rather than HAL9000.

I didn’t see any difficult situations that any human wouldn’t be able to manage, but the car couldn’t deal with it. Those self drivers seem to work ok under perfect conditions (good weather, excellent roads, light traffic). You can see what happens when minor issues arise (traffic cones). What happens under more trying circumstances? What if this was at the peak of rush hour?

Accidents? Unnecessary traffic jams? Road rage incidents?

And as an aside, why is this guy wearing a mask, alone in a driverless car?

The door opened; you got in (rolls eyes).

This story sounds like the opening scene for a remake of the original "Terminator".

And a voice over follows - "Then the machines got smarter"

They need a big red panic button in the back so a passenger can just shut it down.

Car was described as a “Waymo” self driving taxi. “Wayless” might be a better description.

"will improve in appearing to mimic human behavior"

When these AI "zombies" are perfected so as to perfectly ape human behavior then the scientists will instruct humanity to fade away to allow these superior beings to take our place.

The answer to the Fermi Paradox could be that once a civilization becomes advanced enough to create AI zombies they allow themselves to be replaced hoping the AI zombies will travel and explore the Universe.

Only the AI zombies with no real consciousness or curiosity end up just staying put on whatever planet they were created on, or power themselves down waiting for further instructions that never arrive.
