Sea otters weigh about 50 to 70 pounds, they float on their backs and they spend most of their lives in the ocean. River otters are two or three times smaller, they swim with their bellies down and they live mostly on land but travel by water to find food. Sea otters nearly went extinct in the early 1900s because of the fur trade. River otters are common and of “least concern” in California, but are threatened or endangered in some other states.
But Heath offered a warning. “They’ll hiss at you if you get too close,” she said. “They’re vicious little critters.”
That information wasn’t a complete surprise, as I had heard about the river otter attack at Manzanita Lake last summer that sent a visitor to the hospital with severe wounds to the face. I told Heath about it, and she nodded.
“They go for your eyes, for your eyeballs,” she said.

Indiana has a River Otter Hunting season in October - 600 tags are sold. People wrote letters to the Governor in protest. He kept season in place.
They can clean a pond of fish in no time.
All for a burnt weenie sandwich.
Shout out to Zappa fans
OK, this genuinely made me LOL. Thank you.
Saw one of these a couple of years ago alongside the watercanal about a half mile from my house — a burb East of Frisco. Cute little thing. However, anyone not aware that an undomesticated animal will be vicious towards any “stranger” (AKA anyone not a family member of that beastie) coming within reach; deserves a lesson. C’mon, anyone approached a hummingbird nest? Those little farts go right for the eyes.
Indeed. The lion does not feel guilt or remorse for killing the zebra. Doesn’t even think twice about it. And if you encroach its territory, it may very well kill you too.
Yes. Hippos spend their days mostly in water. At dusk they come out to graze. Before dawn they head back to the water. Just about anything and anyone in their path will be mowed to the ground.
Kidnapping, mutilating rapists
They have an open invitation to all Democrat conventions.
—and we can thank Disney for four generations of folks who think the animals get together in the forest and display great wisdom , thwarting the evil people out there —harmless, of course to each other—
—the majestic lion, the ponderous thinking elephant, the sly foxes, etc.,—
But, “Ring of Bright Water”, a 1969 British-American feature film shows them to be SO friendly!
As opposed to what “Watership Down” did for rabbits, making them look badass!
Rrzzzz
The “General” was a particularly mean rabbit, I believe.
Otters don’t put up with any monkey business.

We’re only in it for the comments.
One morning I was casting with my trusty flyrod called the Blue Gill Slayer, when I noticed something swimming off the bow of my Kayak. It was there then gone. I thought I really didn’t see any thing.
Then several moments later, an otter surfaced right before me. It looked at me and I had a great experience looking at it. It showed no fear and took a good long look.
I was fishing in a small cove that was apparently the otter’s turf.
This encounter was a fantastic reason for going out in the kayak and just being
My brother in law lives several miles upstream on the lake and he has an extreme dislike for the otters. They catch fish and then come up on his dock to eat them. They leave very bad messes behind.
Strangely believe it but otters are yet another example of wildlife adapting to life among the humans. Who’d a thunk it?
We have river otters on the CT River in the NEK.
They are fun to watch.
At a distance. Playful critters.
