A French pilot has filed a legal complaint after being subjected to a traumatic hazing ritual in which he was tied to a target and had fighter jets open fire around him.

The unnamed man had just been posted to an airbase in the south of the island of Corsica in March 2019 when he was grabbed by colleagues and tied up with adhesive tape.

After having a bag put over his head, the recruit in his 30s was then transported to a live-fire target range, tied to a target, and then heard fighter jets open fire and drop munitions around him for 20 minutes, according to French media.

The hazing served its purpose and brought out the character of this slacker. Transfer him to the mail haulers squadron.

I like the helocopter hazing the best, where you blindfold the person take them up, then push them out when they are only about a foot above the ground or water

Isn’t exposure to live fire still a part of boot camp training in this country’s armed forces?

Sounds nearly as bad as an Antifa BLM riot.

We don’t have the details, i.e. how close were they shooting and dropping munitions etc.

Hazing has always been in the military, and if you want a military, it will always be there. If you’re a half way decent commander, you know this, and accept it, while you lie to the public and say “absolutely no hazing allowed.”

You have to figure out who really wants to be there, who has heart/drive/guts/balls/desire whatever you want to call it.

***You cannot figure these things out with a scantron test.***

You can have someone that is physically fit, smart, says all the right things, has all the academic pedigrees, but fails when the pressure is on.

***Hazing is disguised in the US as “training,” but make no bones about it, we haze.***

The only way you can really figure out who really wants to be there, has real courage, and is willing to be part of the team, is by hazing the fu#$ out of them (it’s got to hurt and be scary - otherwise it won’t work!) in some fashion and if the kid runs to the authorities (mommy) for help because the other kids were mean to him, he fails the test.

Did he die? Did he get hurt? No. Then he should have shut his mouth and accepted membership to the brotherhood.

If these guys are fighter pilots, there is a >95% chance (made up statistic) they knew what they were doing (they’re not idiots) and while scary and maybe even painful what they did, he likely never was in any “real” danger. The goal isn’t to cause any real damage, it’s to test the guy in a way you cannot do any other way. This also builds trust, in those hazing you (you are at their mercy), but also those that are hazing you have in you (they know you’ll stand by their side when things get tough). What do you think RAP week is in Ranger school (formalized hazing under the name “training”)? What do you think we do with Special Forces, SEALS...? You’ve got to fu#$ with them, sorry-

All of these stories piss me off. If you don’t want to be in the military, don’t join. Sure, everyone wants a cool beret, patch, clasp, scroll, whatever... But stop trying to shape the military into your Fortnight idea of what it should be. Stop crying to the outside world and proving exactly what hazing is intended to show, “that you ain’t got what it takes!”

Sounds like the safest place during a French live-fire exercise is right on top of the target.

Well, if the fighter jets were French he had very little reason to worry.

Men only. Women are apt to freak out and stand up screaming and ... like live grenade practice when the thrown grenade falls two feet in front of the female and everyone has to dive for cover. Just a bad idea ...

I have to be honest, I don’t like to get shot at either.

It’s annoying and pisses me off.

Better to find out from his peers what simulated combat is like than find out what real combat is like from the enemy. As for his peers, better to find who's a whiny beotch back home when there's no risk than find out in the field when lives are at stake.

We didn't face live fire during exercises but were exposed to the "gas chamber" as well as explosives that simulated air-dropped bombs. You really get the sense of being a target when in full chemical warfare gear and shrinking into a hole at dawn with those shaking the ground. "Alarm Red - MOPP Four! Alarm Red - MOPP Four!"

There are risks but if the pilot doesn't want to face them, why did they become a military pilot?

As a civilian, you can sign up for live-fire training in "kill houses". Yes, there are risks but there are some things you absolutely need to know before going into a real situation where someone's actively trying to kill you.

It’s France. They don’t do survival training, but rather, surrender training and he passed.

Yes, life fire is an important part of boot camp, and all other training as well. You fight like you train so train like you fight. We had life fire shot at chest level over us at boot camp. We also had life rounds when doing two man fire and maneuver drills shooting over the person in front of you before you bound pass them and they shoot over you. We had life rounds in the SRT kill houses where we kicked open doors and shot tangos with live friendlies also in the room. Life fire is an ever present and vital part of training for war.
