Goodbye, Calibri. It’s 2021 and it may not be the year for Times New Roman to make a comeback or Comic Sans to takeover, but the default font for Microsoft is definitely changing. Late on Wednesday, Microsoft announced that Calibri, which has been the default font for all things Microsoft since 2007, when it stepped in to replace Times New Roman across Microsoft Office is being removed. “It has served us all well, but we believe it’s time to evolve," wrote Microsoft on its blog. “To help us set a new direction, we’ve commissioned five original, custom fonts to eventually replace Calibri as the default. We’re excited to share these brand-new fonts with you and would love your input," they added.
Calibri, which has dominated the default font for almost 15 years, is finally retiring now and it’s the replacement: The five new sans-serif fonts feature a variety of styles, including traditional, modern, and even one inspired by German road and railway signs. Microsoft is starting to gather feedback on these five new fonts on its social media and it plans to set one as the new Office default font in 2022.

Interestingly enough, although they say the typeface in The Prisoner was Albertus, it’s not the canonical Albertus, the title displayed on the opening scene lacks a tittle over the i in Prisoner...
You mentioned reading FR in comic sans a few weeks ago. I switched to it and love it. Thanks.
“I’ve forgotten how to find my fonts and I don’t care.”
That happens with age. They are still right were they have always been and they make medicine to remind you they are there when you need them.
I so hate Microsoft. (Which just so happens to be Melinda Gates' pet name for her soon to be ex! )
Aha, I guess that explains why I use Helvetica for email and Times-like fonts for serious writing.
My default font is Arial.
The “a” is wrong on those last three.
It will be Chinese.
I find it interesting that the name of the font is not written in the font—the “a” in Skeena is different than in the word “default.”
Time New Roman. The good one.
Any default font needs to add the option of a zero with a slash through it like Consolas. There are too many situation where users need to distinguish between Os and zeros.
Absolutely agreed on both points. Each character needs to be instantly and unambiguously identifiable. A good font that is truly scalable is actually pretty hard to design.
That made me laugh. Yup! I used to care, but no more really. I just hope everything works when I turn on the power button, and if it does, I’m content for the day
Is that a font? Ever heard of it if it is?
Times New Roman
A former transgressive FReeper used to use that handle and post with a color scale in the text.
Ah ok, I guess I don’t remember that freeper. There were some different colored texts on the site I got the funny text from, but I just chose a couple of random ones. I’ve used the upside down one on occasion, but not the others
I find it to be easier on my eyes and it also has the effect of making even bad things look a little cheerier.
;)
