This comes from an old Reader’s Digest joke. Evidently a true stoy but I don’t remember the names involved.
An American diplomat in Moscow back in the 1970s had a cat named Chairman Mao. He had to have dinner at the embassy with a Soviet flunky and tried to lock the cat in a bedroom. Much to his horror after going to the kitchen to get coffee he saw the Soviet diplomat petting the cat, which had escaped the bedroom. The Soviet diplomat asked what the cat’s name was and started laughing hysterically when told the cat was named “Chairman Meow.” Relieved that his guest was not offended the American asked “What’s so funny?” and was told “Brezhnev, has a big, arrogant cat too. Its name is Nixon.”
I have no idea how true the story is, but it was in Reader’s Digest.
