All sturgeon caught in the Detroit River must be released.

Unlike the criminals.

Where does a sturgeon buy a red coat?

Also, the implication is that sturgeon wear masks in the Detroit river...
Not really surprising...

The Twelve Oldest Animals in the World:

Coelacanth
Frilled Shark
Sturgeon
Goblin Shark
Lamprey
Bacteria
Martian Ants
Horseshoe Crab
Sponges
Notostraca
Nautilus
Jellyfish

Glad they had to throw her back. If the Sturgeon was close to 100, it was a female. Or it identified as a gay male. Did anyone ask? *SNORT*

If you can get it in the boat, it’s no big deal.

Anglers can keep one a year, but only if the fish is a certain size and is caught in a few state waters.

After a year one might become too attached to it.

A few thoughts:

Actually, typical lifespan after hatching is probably about 15 minutes. Once they get to “non-vulnerable” size (probably about 8-10”), the odds get a little better. Luckily for sturgeon, a big female can produce 100,000 - 3,000,000 eggs. They need pretty special conditions to breed, however.

I’m not sure what species this is, but 240 lbs. does sound fairly big for a sturgeon in MI. (Some species of sturgeon get much bigger, though, but I believe those species spend part or all of their lives in the sea.)

6 minutes seems awfully quick to land a 240 lb. fish in fresh water. Maybe the USFWS angler was using heavy salt water tackle?

Pretty good Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeonhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon

The typical lifespan is 55 years for a male sturgeon and 70 to 100 years for females, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

So even female sturgeon nag the males into an early grave ; )
