- Now that's a whopper — a very old whopper!
A 240-pound (108.8 kilograms) sturgeon that could be more than 100 years old was caught last week in the Detroit River by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The "real life river monster" was nearly 7 feet (2.1 meters) long,
The typical lifespan is 55 years for a male sturgeon and 70 to 100 years for females, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Frozen round goby, a tasty snack for a sturgeon, was used as bait on a long line that was deep in the river.
All sturgeon caught in the Detroit River must be released.

swam little to close to Monroe and slightly glowing in the dark.

A few thoughts:
Actually, typical lifespan after hatching is probably about 15 minutes. Once they get to “non-vulnerable” size (probably about 8-10”), the odds get a little better. Luckily for sturgeon, a big female can produce 100,000 - 3,000,000 eggs. They need pretty special conditions to breed, however.
I’m not sure what species this is, but 240 lbs. does sound fairly big for a sturgeon in MI. (Some species of sturgeon get much bigger, though, but I believe those species spend part or all of their lives in the sea.)
6 minutes seems awfully quick to land a 240 lb. fish in fresh water. Maybe the USFWS angler was using heavy salt water tackle?
Pretty good Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeonhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon
List looks pretty questionable. No turtles? Whales? Chambered nautilus and horseshoe crab would be lucky to make it to 20.
He is wearing a mask?
Is he worried the old fish will get the chinese virus from him?
i toured the Fermi plant..Unit 1 is still welded shut...
And Jimmy Hoffa was found inside!
Was the fish bald and toothless?
Uffda!
“Probably cleaner water than it was in the 70s”
In the 60’s and early 70’s we spent a lotta summers on Lake Michigan beaches near Gary.
You would get there around 10 a.m.. Spend the first 1/2 hour picking up dead fish. (And when the moms weren’t watching whapping each other with the said fish!)
USA has done a tremendous job cleaning up our country.
Yet the same crew who believes in global climate what ever turn a blind eye to China.
Makes me wonder if this is just about control. After this past year I would vote yes.
One of the greatest movies - and has ‘Fish’ in the title:
‘Big Fish’

So even female sturgeon nag the males into an early grave ; )
“can you eat anything from those waters?”
My first thought. Hard to think any river in the rustbelt not being a toxic wast dump.
“100 year old crabs”
The itching must have been intolerable.
Was that fish called Wanda ????
I see what you did there!
Wish I had an aquarium that big.
“100 year old crabs”
Sure that the donor of said crabs wasn’t 100?
Elucidate please. My mind boggles. :)
That’s a lot of turd chomping!
