Astronomy Picture of the Day - Apollo 11: Earth, Moon, Spaceship

Explanation: After the most famous voyage of modern times, it was time to go home. After proving that humanity has the ability to go beyond the confines of planet Earth, the first humans to walk on another world -- Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin -- flew the ascent stage of their Lunar Module back to meet Michael Collins in the moon-orbiting Command and Service Module. Pictured here on 1969 July 21 and recently digitally restored, the ascending spaceship was captured by Collins making its approach, with the Moon below, and Earth far in the distance. The smooth, dark area on the lunar surface is Mare Smythii located just below the equator on the extreme eastern edge of the Moon's near side. It is said of this iconic image that every person but one was in front of the camera.

I miss the America of my youth. We could build things, we could make bold moves. These under 40 folks of today have no idea what has been lost to them.

You are not kidding! I remember the amazement I felt when the signal was received that Apollo 11 had landed on the moon.

As someone pointed out last week, Astronaut Michael Collins is the only human being living or dead not captured by this photo.

Philo Taylor Farnsworth, the man who invented electronic television was watching the moon landing that day. He had been screwed out of the profits due him by RCA and FDR's corrupt courts. In spite of that , seeing the landing mere seconds after it happened , thanks to his invention , convinced him that his effort was worth it afterall.

One of the Wright brothers lived long enough to fly in a 747. Let that sink in.

I had the honor of watching Apollo 11 (2019) in IMAX. All the footage was authentic. The negatives were digitally cleaned up to make it pristine in high-def. Truly amazing.

You can rent/buy it in HD from Amazon Prime and VUDU. Highly recommended.

“One of the Wright brothers lived long enough to fly in a 747. Let that sink in.”

[Wiki] “The Wright brothers – Orville (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912)”

[WIKI] “Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 – August 26, 1974)”

Lindbergh perhaps.

That can’t be, Wilbur died in 1912, Orville died in 1948. 747 first flew in 1969. Chuck Lindbergh lived long enough to chat with the Apollo 11 crew, and fly in a 747 though.

We had just moved to Houston, TX from Old Bridge, NJ that week and finished unloading big moving truck in 100°+F !!! Major shock for Us “Yankee’s”.

Mom and I were invited to the Neighbors house to watch the Landing, Moonwalk and Takeoff of the LM on the Big Color TV. Very cool for an 8 year old !!! I was building a 4-1/2 foot tall model of the Saturn V Rocket complete with separable Stages, the Eagle LM with folding landing gear that could Dock/Undock with the Columbia CMD/SM.

I still have the vision of all of the multicolored Moon Dust shower from the Rocket Exhaust of Lunar Launch.

Back when American ended in “I Can” and The American People with were Proud, somewhat at odds with each other but when something needed to be done, American’s GOT IT DONE, WITH PRIDE and DETERMINATION !

I now wonder why We lost that Pride and Determination ???

Michael Collins took the photo from the Command Module. Armstrong and Aldrin were in the lunar module (in the photo) returning from the surface of the moon back to the Command module. Only the Command Module returned to Earth.
