Age is a terrifying thing for a lot of people. Your body is not as nimble as it was before, you start to forget things, and people generally tend to live in the memories of the glorious past rather than creating new ones. When it comes to big rock musicians it hits even harder since artists start losing the very energy that gave them fame and fortune. It’s tempting to just continue riding your name till the very end not releasing anything relevant and just exploiting your catalog of classics, but some bands have the courage to finish while they're still strong and able. Let's take a look at 7 rock and metal bands who called it quits at just the right time.

Without clicking yet, The Beatles have to be there.
It’s been a while since I saw “The Last Waltz” so I may be a bit off in my recollection, but I think Robbie Robertson reflected on their situation in 1978 or so and said, in effect, “Man, The Band has been doing this for 15 years. That’s a long time. How much more can you do? It’s time to say goodbye.”
And Keith Richards is still laughing at that little joke.
I heard of five of them; bought albums from two of them; and listened to only one of them for a little while when I was young — Led Zeppelin. Then it became so formulaic and dull that I gave up.
I only recognized Nirvana, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
That is not to say I never heard any music by the other groups, only that I did not pay any attention to the notice of their names when and if I ever did heat them.
Without clicking either, I have to add The Police.
not sure I would call Rush heavy metal...
I went to The Who’s “Farewell Tour”.
In 1981.
You’d think, but no.
Nope
Yeah. It would have been nice to see them with Keith Moon, though.
The 7 are Slayer, Dillinger Escape Plan, Nirvana, The White Stripes, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Rush. A really lame article.
Why? Just because Geddy used clothes dryers for amps doesn’t mean the genre wasn’t heavy metal.
It depends on whether you have to look at them or not.

I went to the Who’s final tour at Giants Stadium in New Jersey in the 80s. I just recently watched it on YouTube. I was pretty drunk for the concert as I was a senior in high school at the time. No protesting for our class. Just good times. We were weekend warriors. No SJW. Last thing I remember about that night was David Johansen singing “We gotta get out of this place”.
Beatles are not on that list?
Wasn’t a bigger break up in history.
